The artistic duo Elmgreen & Dragset look askance at contemporary art.
In the performance of Happy Days in the Art World, Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset are portrayed by actors.
The play looks at the challenges inherent in close collaboration and the phenomena of artist’s block and career panic, and expounds the duo’s witty and perceptive view of contemporary art. Elmgreen and Dragset are also responsible for the set design.
Michael Elmgreen from Denmark and Ingar Dragset from Norway have worked together since 1995. For the Venice Biennale three years ago the duo curated the exhibitions in the neighbouring Danish and Nordic Pavilions, and in 2008 they staged an animated version of the opera L’amour de loin by Kaija Saariaho.
In Happy Days in the Art World they present a performance that looks under the covers of contemporary art, with clear reference to Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days and Waiting for Godot. It premiered in New York in November, and the Bergen International Festival will be the world premiere of the Nordic version.
