This holiday season NOCCA Stage Company is proudly presenting the regional premiere of the unique musical storytelling of ALL IS CALM, The Christmas Truce of 1914. In celebration of the 100th year anniversary of the signing of the Armistice Treaty in Paris, this new musical celebration has the magic and passion that will move audiences through its dynamic use of the voice. Directed by Big Easy Award winner Blake Coheley, with a small cast of young community theatre professionals, NOCCA alums and NOCCA students, together they will take you to a special place in history that has seemed to be overlooked by many.
This extraordinary event took place in 1914, the first year of the war, and was never repeated. Soldiers from many countries put down their guns and left their trenches to meet their enemies in “No Man’s Land”. They exchanged gifts of tobacco, rum and chocolates; even photographs of love ones. They sang songs, played a game of soccer, and buried each other’s dead. Upon orders from above, they eventually returned to their trenches and re-instigated a war that would last four more years and at a cost of more than ten million lives. The heroes of this story are the lowest of the ranks — the young, the hungry, the cold, and the optimistic — those who acted with great courage to put down their guns, overcoming a fear that placed a gun in their hands in the first place. “Their story puts a human face on a forgotten war, a forgotten time and a forgotten event, and this simple, but touching story makes for great theatre” Coheley said.
ALL IS CALM, The Christmas Truce of 1914 will be presented in Lupin Hall on the NOCCA campus on December 6, 7, 8, 12, 13 and 14 at 7:30pm. Originally written by Peter Rothstein, with Vocal Arrangements by Erick Lichte and Timothy C. Takach. Ticket information is available at eventbrite or at nocca.com.
