The Festival will open August 12 and run for 5 weeks in Nashville and 1 week in Franklin, and include two productions by two great playwrights. August Wilsons JITNEY, directed by Chuck Smith, from the Goodman Theater in Chicago, will play the first two weeks in collaboration with Kennie Playhouse Theatre, followed by 12th NIGHT by William Shakespeare, directed by Jim Warren, founding Artistic Director of the American Shakespeare Center.This family-(and dog)-friendly Nashville tradition includes a nightly pre-show concert series, Insight scholar-led discussions, NSF Apprentice Company performances, food trucks, and more.For the evening of Saturday, August 28, sonorous soul singer Afton Wolfe, whom The East Nashvillian compares to Tom Waits and Randy Newman, will provide the pre-show entertainment with songs from his debut album, Kings for Sale.The mission of The Nashville Shakespeare Festival is to educate and entertain the Mid-South community through professional Shakespearean experiences. A non-profit organization, The Festival accomplishes this goal through public performances and educational workshops for young people and businesses. The Festival employs the most talented theatre artists from around Nashville to help create unique and relevant productions and programs that stimulate the creative thinking and communication skills of everyone from business men and women to children throughout Middle Tennessee.Since 1988 The Festival has produced its annual free Shakespeare in the Park every summer in Centennial Park. Since 1992, The Festival has offered year-round outreach to schools and the community through in-classroom workshops, experiences for young actors, and performances for students. In January 2008, The Festival launched its annual Winter Shakespeare production, offering both public performances and student matinees at Troutt Theater. In 2008, The Festival also launched its Business Workshops which bring a Shakespearean perspective and approach to business and management.
