In a 1929 Tampa cigar factory, workers roll tobacco by hand while a "lector" reads Anna Karenina aloud to pass the hours. But as Tolstoy's tale of love and ruin unfolds, the workers start living it — even as a machine arrives that could replace them all. Nilo Cruz's Pulitzer Prize–winning play is a sensuous, heartbreaking ode to craft, story, and the human hands behind it. Part of NCP's America at 250 season, exploring what holds a community together when it's pushed apart.
