Southworth presents the world premier of REDshift, a play inside the planetarium about Elisse, a high-functioning autistic young woman whose passion leads her to use the Hubble Space Telescope to create the Hubble Deep Field.

Exploring Autism Through the Stars

It begins in her high school years, where she is bullied for behaviors associated with Asperger’s syndrome. She finds refuge in the digital presence of legendary astronomer Edwin Hubble, who inspires her to reach beyond the stars. Doctorate and position at the Space Science Institute in hand, Elisse overcomes immense personal and professional challenges to use the Hubble Space Telescope and to find, at the edge of the universe, the Hubble Deep Field.

As Elisse moves toward connection and love, the story recapitulates how society has come to understand autism, Asperger's, and neuro-diverse individuals.

An Unparalleled Visual Experience

Set against the immersive backdrop of a planetarium dome, the staged reading of Redshift integrates stunning projections of galaxies, stars, and the night sky. The innovative use of multimedia creates a celestial tapestry that complements the actors’ performances, bringing the cosmos to life in a way that is both breathtaking and thought-provoking.

A Stellar Cast and Creative Team

The play features nine talented actors who bring to life Elisse’s journey and the vivid personalities around her. Through their performances, Redshift sheds light on the challenges and triumphs of individuals on the autism spectrum, underscoring the value of diverse perspectives in science and society.

Celebrating the Intersection of Art and Science

“We want to tell about the excitement of reaching the edge -- not only in the external universe but also within each individual,” said playwright Chalmers. “Through Redshift, we foster greater understanding and appreciation for the potential in everyone.”
