On November 13 the Deering Masonic Lodge wil host a momentous event in Maine's Masonic community and the Portland theater scene. The Lodge will host the debut reading of a one act Masonic themed play written and directed by a Maine brother with a cast from across the region. The show is open to the public with no charge, though food or clothing donations are asked for the annual winter collection for the homeless. Show starts at 730 and lasts under an hour, with a private Stated meeting following for attending brethren. This will be the first time in the history of Maine a play combines all the variables of being explictly about the Masonic experience, taking place in the present day, written by a Maine brother and performed for the public. The play was written 2016 and inspired by Rudyard Kipling's short story of the same name. This show is about a guy that left Masonry after the first degree on the eve of his father not being voted in as Master, and who would also leave the Craft to soon die heart-broken. Years later, when Masonry is a forgotten bitter taste, the guy finds himself unexpectantly attending Lodge again. Here he discovers what Masonry really means, comes to terms with his father's death, and understands why even in the face of disappointment his father still encouraged him to stay with Masonry.
