The 10th edition of The Music Center's highly popular Sleepless: The Music Center After Hours will transform The Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, filling it with Cuba's most talented artists and featuring live performances; originally created photographic, sound and light installations; film screenings; and a mercadito of Cuban artwork and merchandise. This special edition of Sleepless will offer a 21st century re?imagining and re?interpretation of what it means to be a contemporary Cuban artist working in a globally-influenced world, all in a late-night experiential environment. Highlight artists include master of Cuban Tres (double string guitar) Pancho Amat; singer, rapper, musician and jazz poet Telmary Diaz; percussionist Yissy Bandancha, and more*. Sleepless goers can:

  • Stroll the Sleepless Mercadito, featuring original Cuban prints, vinyl and munchies with sound design that transports guests to old Havana;
  • Uncover Cuba's diverse history where Spanish, African and Caribbean influences merge together, featuring original visual installations by Alejandro Reyes Castro and projections by Michael Ohsann;
  • Tap into their "inner goddess" and encounter intimate performances from Telmary Díaz and Yissy & Bandancha, two of Havana's female innovators of contemporary Cuban music, curated by Betto Arcos;
  • Bend reality through artist Danay Nopales' Reflexiones, a 3-D photographic exhibition that plays with shapes and reflections to create beautiful illusions;
  • Groove to a range of Guajira, Jazz son, and Salsa at La Descarga, featuring Cuban legends Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra and Pancho Amat, and learn Salsa dance moves from Leslie Ferreira; and
  • Celebrate Cuba's African roots in classic to contemporary music with a Dance Party featuring DJ Jigüe direct from Cuba and curated by dublab with djs Chief Boima, T-Kay Sangward and LA Party Rail Up.

This special edition of Sleepless is part of The Music Center's Cuba: Antes, Ahora / Then, Now, a multifaceted exploration of traditional and contemporary Cuban art that is part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA. During this three-day celebration, The Music Center will present more than 48 world-class Cuban and Cuban-American musicians, dancers and visual artists at The Music Center and Grand Park in Los Angeles, offering Angelenos of all ages access to the art of Cuba and the opportunity to experience the country's dynamic arts scene.
