Long Island Native Mat Eisenstein Holds Master Class at Long Island High School for the Arts

Theatre students at the Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) had the chance to perform for Mat Eisenstain - composer, arranger and vocal coach - with local roots.

A Plainview native, Mr. Eisenstein is a New York-City based music director, pianist, composer, arranger and vocal coach. The Broadway musician counts among his many accomplishments, a recent stint as the Associate Conductor/Keyboard 2 player for the Broadway company of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." He has also conducted the Broadway companies of "Newsies," "The Book of Mormon,' "Elf," and "Bye, Bye Birdie," just to name a few. Mr. Eisenstein has played keyboards in more than 40 Broadway productions, and starting this month, he'll be the Assistant Conductor/Keyboard 2 Player of the Broadway's latest hit, "Frozen."

During the master class, students performed song selections that showcased their voices and stage presence, while Mat intently listened and offered feedback on their performances.

"It was a lot of fun," Mr. Eisenstein said of critiquing the LIHSA students. "They are very talented. It's not easy to get up there...they have to sing, act, emote and take constructive criticism. It's a hard job!"

The Master Class program is part of the school's ongoing mission to provide its students with inside looks at the industries they are pursuing, and to introduce them to mentors within their chosen field.
