Tour Technical Director - The Acting Company - The Acting Company

General: The Acting Company seeks a Touring Technical Director (TD) for their 2025-26 National Tour. The TD will join the production during its design and rehearsal process in NYC while beginning the tour advance with the Production Manager. The TD will lead load in and the tech of the production at its regional presenting theatre with the rest of the technical tour staff. While on the road, the TD will lead the scenic load-in, coordinating the work of all departments and tour staff (Lighting Supervisor, Sound Supervisor, Wardrobe Supervisor, Stage Management) at each tour venue. The TD will be a leader on the tour and must be dedicated to creating safe, open, and productive workspaces.







Company Information: The Acting Company (www.theactingcompany.org) is a fifty-year-old theatre company dedicated to developing artists and audiences through national repertory tours. This season’s two show repertory will include an adaptation of Great Expectations by Nikki Massoud (directed by Devin Brain) and William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (directed by Risa Brainin). The rep will rehearse in NYC, tech and run at a regional presenting theater in November 2025 in Ventura, CA, before touring nationally from January 2026 - March 2026 in a wide variety of theatrical venues from The Library Theatre in Hoover, AL to State Theatre in New Brunswick, NJ.







Responsibilities:



Manage design in pre-production process, resolving issues of scale, budget, scheduling, design, or communication alongside the Production Manager.



Supervise and oversee updates with the build shop on ensuring scenic elements are built for tour feasibility.



Supervise tour production personnel in coordination with the Producing Director, Associate Producer, Production Manager, and Company Manager.



Coordinate and lead meetings with presenting house personnel to discuss tour advance information, serving as primary technical liaison between tour and venues.



Lead scenic load-in and notes during tech to prepare for putting the show on the road after its initial run.



Create tour truck pack plan in collaboration with tour staff and Production Manager. Prep and restock department kits with tour staff and Production Manager in preparation for tour.



Prepare for and oversee load in and strike at each tour venue – maintaining safety, efficiency, and the quality of the design execution within each venue’s idiosyncrasies.



Act as point of contact on the road for tour travel vehicles (bus & truck), coordinating arrival time and loading dock locations with the presenting houses.



Facilitate any additional rehearsals needed on tour with Company Management and Stage Management.



Ensure that all technical equipment (soft goods, props, etc.) is fully repaired, maintained, cleaned, returned (if rented), and packed for storage at the end of the tour.











Qualifications:



At least 5 years of carpentry, technical direction, production management, or equivalent experience



Able to lift up to 50 lbs., push/pull 100lbs, stand for extended periods of time (3+ hours), navigate multiple levels of stairs.



Basic drafting skills are a plus.



Hands-on experience in a management position on a theatrical tour is a plus.



A valid US driver's license is a plus.



Must have NYC housing for pre-production weeks. Housing provided during Tech process and Tour.







Production Timeline & Fees (as of March 2025, subject to change, exact dates TBD):



June – September 2025: Pre-Production / Tour Advance



TD works hourly (~10-20 hrs/week), as needed for design process, shop build check-ins, and tour advance



Remote work possible, hours flexible



$30/hour



September – November 2025: Rehearsal Support / Tour Advance



September 23rd, 2025: First Day of Great Expectations Rehearsal



October 7th, 2025: First Day of A Midsummer Night’s Dream Rehearsal



TD works hourly, as needed for company introductions, initial rehearsal setup, rehearsal support, production and design meetings, and advance meetings.



$30/hour



November 16th – December 6th, 2025: Tech & Previews in Ventura, CA



TD begins full-time, onsite work for Tech and Tour Advance



$1,250/week



December 7th, 2025 – December 24th, 2026: Tour Advance & Prep



TD advances tour with tour staff



Remote possible 12/7-12/19, 12/19-12/24 strike in Ventura, CA.



$1,250/week, pro-rated for holiday week



January 12th – February 22nd, 2026: National Tour



TD works full-time on the road



Dates include a final week post tour to pack the show, make returns, finish final paperwork



$1,250/week



February 23rd – March 1, 2026: Pack up



TD works hourly as needed to unpack truck, return rentals, and clean up kit (20-40 hrs)



$30/hour

Salary:
