BREAKDOWN

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

YASMIN- Young woman, Syrian. A fierce survivalist living in a refugee camp who prostitutes herself to survive the camp’s brutal conditions. She was once on the path of becoming a traditional housewife, but the combination of a brutal rape in her past and the conditions in the camp have obliterated that dream. She is tough, with a dry humor and feral spirit, and contains a deep vulnerability. She holds the moral center of the play.

KHALED- Young man, Syrian. A newcomer to the refugee camp, who comes from a similarly traditional background as Yasmin. He is in the throes of understanding that the moral order of his upbringing has crumbled, and begins to experiment with loosening his traditional attitudes about sex. He is taken aback by Yasmin’s frankness and fierceness, and falls in love with her.

OMAR – Young man, Syrian. Yasmin’s ex-fiancé. A kind-hearted but deeply traditional young man, who is very much the product of his upbringing, and is unable to stay with Yasmin after her virginity has been taken from her. Leaving Yasmin pains him, but staying together is completely unfathomable to him and his family.

ABDULLAH- Male, 40’s, Syrian. A man alone in the camp, having lost his wife and son in the war. Dignified, intelligent, and contained, he feels much more genteel than what me might expect in the camp. He is looking for safety when he comes to Yasmin, and is disgusted with himself after their encounter.
