The 1950s are out, and change is in the air! Hairspray, winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, is a family-friendly musical, piled bouffant-high with laughter, romance and deliriously tuneful songs.
It's 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable teen, Tracy Turnblad, has only one desire – to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network... all without denting her 'do!
Tracy Turnblad: Our story's unsuspecting protagonist. Confident, talented, and incredibly determined. A romantic with a good heart and desire to cut up the dance floor. Always on top of the latest trends. Tracy is a young lady with big hair and an even bigger personality — sweet but strong in her convictions. Bigger in size than the other girls, not shy about it, and can still dance with the best of them. Excellent singer and dancer with wonderful stage presence. White. 18+ to play high school age. Gender: Female Presenting. Mezzo-soprano with a strong theatre/pop belt. Vocal range: G3–G5.
Corny Collins: The charismatic host of the Corny Collins Show. Good looking and smooth talking, genuinely nice both on and off camera. 25–35. White. Gender: Male Presenting. Strong pop singer, high baritone. Vocal range: D3–A4.
Edna Turnblad: Tracy's big and blonde mother. A working housewife who has lost confidence and dreams of being a plus-size clothing designer. Boisterous and commanding. Often played by a male in drag. 40–55. White. Gender: Male Presenting. Bass-baritone. Vocal range: F3–G5.
Penny Pingleton: Tracy's best friend and dorky sidekick. Not the brightest but well-intentioned. Bursting to get free of her mother's control, she falls for Seaweed with childlike curiosity. 18+ to play high school age. White. Gender: Female Presenting. Strong high belt, contemporary theatre/pop voice. Vocal range: A3–G5.
Velma Von Tussle: Amber's mother and the director of Corny Collins's show. Devious taskmaster and snobby racist. Former Miss Baltimore Crabs who will go to any length to ensure her daughter is the next big thing. 45–55. White. Gender: Female Presenting. Mezzo-soprano with strong belt mix. Vocal range: G3–E5.
Amber Von Tussle: Link's girlfriend and Tracy's nemesis. Pretty, shallow, snobby, and racist. Can't dance but expected to win Miss Baltimore Hairspray. Always needs to be the center of attention. Female, 18+ to play high school age. White. Gender: Female Presenting. Mezzo-soprano. Vocal range: A3–F5.
Link Larkin: The star heartthrob on Corny Collins' show. Extremely attractive and talented. Hoping for a recording contract, he unexpectedly falls for Tracy. 18+ to play high school age. White. Gender: Male Presenting. Tenor with strong falsetto. Vocal range: G3–A5.
Seaweed J. Stubbs: Tracy's classmate and friend who faces discrimination due to his skin color. Cocky but lovable, talented in song and dance, and falls for Penny. Black. 18+ to play high school age. Gender: Male Presenting. Excellent soulful, pop singer - high tenor. Vocal range: F3–D5.
Little Inez: Seaweed's little sister. Black. 18+ to play early teens. Gender: Female Presenting. Soulful voice with strong belt mix. Vocal range: G3–F5.
Motormouth Maybelle: Seaweed and Little Inez's mother, also appears as the guest DJ on the Corny Collins Negro Day show. Big, beautiful, proud, sassy and confident. Black. 40–50. Gender: Female Presenting. Alto with high belt. Vocal range: F3–E5.
Wilbur Turnblad: Tracy's simpleminded and kind father. Owns a joke shop and supports his daughter, and loves his wife Edna very much. White. 40–55. Gender: Male Presenting. Baritone with strong falsetto. Vocal range: A3–A5.
Prudy Pingleton: Penny's strict mother. Very conservative, controlling, and closed minded. 40–55. White. Gender: Female Presenting. Mezzo-soprano with character belt. Vocal range: D4–B4.
