INSTRUCTIONS
Please prepare two contrasting monologues: one Shakespeare and one contemporary, no more than 4 minutes total. Actors auditioning for Fannie u/s may choose to sing 16 bars of a spiritual or gospel song a cappella in place of one of the monologues. Slate name and height and tape no closer than waist-up. Please email a headshot (JPEG) and resume (PDF) with a link to your video to casting@osfashland.org.

Allen Elizabethan Theatre
This electrifying, immersive call to action is inspired by the life of famed civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer—whose courage, humor and grit reminds us there’s courage in the face of fire, hope in tomorrow and that we all have a stake in our country. Performed and sung by Chicago’s E. Faye Butler , this passionate “rallying” cry—part spiritual revival, part political call to action—defines what it means to be a true revolutionary.
Fannie Lou Hamer: she/her, 40s-50s, African American. One charismatic actress will sing (gospel songs and spirituals) and narrate all parts. CAST
The role of Fannie is CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as a possible understudy or replacement.

Mia, an American conflict photographer, wakes up at the site of a massacre in Syria, not sure how she got there. With her Turkish girlfriend Derya and her Californian mother Jane, Mia must slowly and painfully piece together the details of her past to find out what happened.
Mia: she/her, e-mid 30s, White. An American conflict photographer living in Turkey. She’s an artist; a damaged soul with a sharp sense of humor as well as deep empathy who absorbs much of the trauma around her.
Derya/Salima/Aisha: CAST.
Derya: she/her, mid-30s-mid 40s. Turkish, Mia’s ex-girlfriend, teaches economics in Istanbul. Speaks Turkish.
Salima: she/her, mid-30s, droll, local Arab woman whom Mia photographs.
Aisha: she/her, 30s, Arab.
Jane/Marian/Nancy she/her, late 50s-late 60s, White. Plays Jane and other roles:
Jane: Mia’s well-intentioned, suburban California mother. Don’t underestimate her.
Marian: A seasoned photographer.
Nancy: A grieving mother whose dead son Mia photographed.

The Ghost of Holidays Past—CAST - Any gender, 30s-50s, any race/ethnicity. This sarcastic, wisecracking Ghost takes Carol on a journey through Christmases from her past.
The Ghost of Holidays Present --CAST - Any gender, 30s-50s, any race/ethnicity. The irreverent Ghost takes Carol on a journey of her acquaintancesʼ Christmas celebrations.
The Ghost of Holidays Future—CAST - Any gender, 30s-50s, any race/ethnicity. A comedic silent ghost who shows Carol an ominous vision of her future.
Carol Scroogenhouse— she/her, 50’s/60’s, any race/ethnicity. A society woman, though she experimented some with the bohemian life in her youth, she still clings to outdated notions of status and society.
Jaqueline Marley—she/her, 50s, Carol's old friend. She never had her social awakening, and so she wanders through the afterlife, embittered and jealous.
The Narrator—she/her, 20s+, any race/ethnicity. She guides the audience through time and place.
Freddie—she/her; they/them, 20s-30, any race/ethnicity. Carol’s niece. She gently tries to urge her aunt to the changing progressive tides and wants her aunt to be a part of her life. Keeps her relationship with love interest Rebecca under wraps.
Barbara Crotchit—she/her, 30s/40s, any race/ethnicity. Carol’s assistant. She helps run the day to day of the society foundation and never gets any time off.
Mister Crotchit—he/him, 30s/40s, any race/ethnicity. Barbara’s husband, His name is actually “Mister”. Happily married to Barbara and devoted to her.
Teensy Tom—he/him, 20s-30s, any race/ethnicity. Barbara and Mister’s son.
Fanny Scroogenhouse—she/her, 20s. any race/ethnicity. Carol’s older sister and Freddie’s mother. She cares deeply about Carol, but fears she’s becoming too close-minded
Mr. Wezzyfig—he/him, 40s/50s, any race/ethnicity. The beloved leader of Lord Marley’s Shakespeare Players.
Mrs. Wezzyfig—she/her, 40s-50s, any race/ethnicity. Mr. Wezzyfig’s wife and the leading dame of Lord Marley’s Shakespeare Players.
Roger Dullwit—he/him, any race/ethnicity 40s/50s. A leading actor with Lord Marley’s Players, but has trouble remembering his lines.
Dick Wilkins—he/him, 40s/50s, any race/ethnicity. Carol’s true love. A totally fun actor in Lord Marley’s company.
Rebecca—she/her; they/them, 20s-30s, any race/ethnicity. Freddie’s beloved. Everyone thinks she’s rad, and she’s super-good at charades.
Charley--any gender, 20s and up, any race/ethnicity. Solicitor for donations to the poor. SUPER cockney sounding. Robert’s partner.
Robert— any gender, 20s and up, any race/ethnicity. Solicitor for donations to the poor. SUPER cockney sounding. Charley’s partner.
