BREAKDOWN

DIRECTOR’S NOTE ON CASTING: This show explores the NYC punk scene in the early 2000’s and themes surrounding mental health, family and friendships, body positivity, and loving oneself as you are! With that spirit in mind, to tell the story, the show requires a high energy, passionate, diverse and inclusive company for all the roles. We encourage submissions of all gender identities for all roles in this production.

SYNOPSIS: A depressed and anxious, 298-pound student, Troy Billings, is contemplating suicide when a homeless former student from Troy’s school, Curt McCrae, intervenes and saves his life. In turn, Curt insists that they form a band together with Troy on the drums. The only issue is that Troy can’t play drums, but together, they create the band Rage Tectonic. With little knowledge on the drums and a lot of support from his newfound friends, he jumps right into practicing for an upcoming gig. Through this process, he finds self-love and confidence while realizing that he is desperately trying to save Curt’s life from drug abuse and abuse.

SEEKING:

TROY BILLINGS – he/him, 18 years old. Any Ethnicity. An anxious/depressed and achingly hormonal teenage boy who, beneath all his emotional pain, is witty and intelligent and full of love. He is described in the script as being over 275 lbs. and ultimately withdrawn from life since his mom died seven years ago. He, however, clings to food and his re-birthed love of playing the drums as an escape from loneliness. Strong pop/rock sounding voice [Range: C3-D5].

CURT McCRAE – he/him, 19 years old. Any Ethnicity. With an absent father and an unstable mother, he has become mostly homeless. His desperation to have a family and to belong to something important comes through in his unrelenting desire to form a kickass band and to be famous through his sensational guitar playing skills. Curt has learned to get what he needs by being a charming, master manipulator — disarming but undisciplined and grandiose. Strong pop/rock sounding voice [Range: C3-C5].

WILLIAM BILLINGS – he/him, 40s. Any Ethnicity. Former marine who was left a widower at a young age with two young sons and no real concept of how to parent them alone, but with a sense of duty that he must. His attempts at discipline often backfire and he turns a blind eye to the darker sides of their personalities. He loves his sons, Troy and Dayle, deeply; but he typically only relates to his youngest Dayle, who's become a popular athlete. Strong pop/rock sounding voice [Range: C3-G4].

DAYLE BILLINGS – he/him, 15 years old. Any Ethnicity. He is popular in school for excelling in sports and is virile without boundaries. It's been over the years since his mother's death, and he's clung to his strict father and never really learned how to process strong emotions. And without much nurturing, his grief has turned inward to rage and confusion which causes him to bully his older, yet embarrassing, brother, Troy. Strong pop/rock sounding voice [Range: C3-A5]

OLLIE TREMONT – she/her, 20 years old. Person of color. The former drummer and mother hen of “Smack Metal Puppets”, she's had to deal with a lot in her life so she's deeply in search of stability, while also yearning to stay true to her original dream of being in a successful punk rock band. As Curt’s “sister figure”, she has seen the best and worst of him. Strong pop/rock sounding voice [Range: C4-E5]

PIPER CHAVANET – they/them, 19 years old. Person of color. The bass player of both Smack Metal Puppets and then Rage/Tectonic. A runaway from rural Louisiana, they met the others while singing for money in Washington Square Park. They are a stoner and always looking for a good time. Their love of creature comforts often conflicts with their and their friends' strict anti-establishment facade. Strong pop/rock sounding voice [Range: C3-G4].
