School of American Ballet is the official school of New York City Ballet, founded in 1934 by George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein and based at Lincoln Center in New York. It provides classical ballet training in the Balanchine technique to students aged 6 to 18 through its Winter Term, which combines artistic programs with academics, housing and residence life, wellness and enrichment programming, and professional placement support for graduating dancers. Admission to the Winter Term and to the summer programs is by audition, held at locations across the country and by video. SAB also runs summer courses in New York, a New York Junior Session, and open programming for the wider public: Littlest Dancers classes for 2-3 year olds taken with a caregiver, Little Dancers classes for 4-5 year olds, and one-day and one-week Experience workshops for older teens and young adults. The school states that its alumni make up more than 95% of New York City Ballet and dance with companies across the US and abroad. Students perform in annual Workshop Performances.
