STRAIGHT ON TIL MORNING Opens 1/28 At Gene Frankel Theater
by BWW News Desk - January 28, 2009
A new production, the downtown premiere, of STRAIGHT ON TIL MORNING opens January 28th at the Gene Frankel Theatre. STRAIGHT ON TIL MORNING mashes up the tale of Peter Pan, the cold calm secrets of author JM Barrie and the neighborhood everyone loves to hate - Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and offers a glimpse of the addictive fervor that was tangible before the cranes came in. Before the pool held concerts. Before the TastyD on Bedford. Part Indie Rock aficionado, part dive-bar junky, the play follows Peter and his cohorts over the course of a 24 hour period as the past comes back, the future seems boring and The Now wins out. Only today, in the rapidly changing playground of Williamsburg, could a play written in 2003 then produced in 2009 be considered a PERIOD PIECE, but that's exactly what this new production of STRAIGHT ON TIL MORNING is.

Joe Steptoe's MUFARO'S BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS Begins 2/14
by Gabrielle Sierra - January 23, 2009
Dallas Children's Theater proudly presents John Steptoe's, MUFARO'S BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS, a gorgeous Caldecott Award winning Cinderella tale that celebrates goodness, generosity, love and traditional African song. Adapted for the stage by Karen Abbott, MUFARO'S BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS is part of the Discovery Theater Series for Families at PlayhouseSquare. When a great African king desires a wife, only the most perfect maidens in the land are invited to meet him. Mufaro, a dignified and caring African villager, has two beautiful daughters. When he leaves for the hunt and the sisters are alone, Manyara is always angry, while Nyasha is positive and kind. Chenzira, a messenger, brings word that the Great King is inviting all of the 'Most Worthy and Beautiful Daughters in the Land to appear before him' so that he might choose his Queen. Mufaro is very pleased that both of his daughters should be selected and agrees to accompany them at sunrise. That night, Manyara, believing herself better and prettier than her sister, sets out alone so that she can be presented to the king first. What will happen to each girl as she responds to hooting owls, enchanted trees laughing and the other strange beings she encounters along the way? DCT's Executive Artistic Director and director of the play, Robyn Flatt, states, 'This wonderful folktale celebrates virtue and kindness of the heart. Its ethical lesson is simple yet powerful: ?as you sow so shall you reap', or as a hungry beggar in the play says, ?pretty is as pretty does'.'

Lyric Stage's CABARET '09 Fundraising Event Presented On 2/7
by Gabrielle Sierra - January 21, 2009
On February 7, 2009, the Lyric Stage League presents CABARET '09: THE LEGENDARY DAYS OF LAS VEGAS, the annual fund-raising event for Lyric Stage. Marilyn Maye, fresh from her latest New York City triumph, will headline this year's gala at the beautiful Four Seasons Resort and Club. Billy Stritch, direct from his engagement with Liza Minnelli on Broadway at the Palace Theater, will accompany Ms. Maye. Call 972-594-1904 for tickets or more info. Marilyn Maye was one of the brightest lights of television, supper clubs and the recording industry during the 1960's. She became a fixture on THE TONIGHT SHOW with Steve Allen and Johnny Carson and enjoyed a great recording career with RCA. After an absence of over 15 years, she made a triumphant return to New York City last fall. THE NEW YORK OBSERVER's Rex Reed proclaimed 'This woman has everything. She can belt, and she can sing ballads with the kind of warmth that makes your heart smile. She has a theatrical flair that captivates and enthralls, and jazz-spiced chops that can reach notes most singers one-third her age can't even hit in their dreams. The standing ovations were unlike anything I've seen since the halcyon days of Lena Horne at the Waldorf. She's the real deal.'

Led by renowned Artistic Director Judith Jamison, the Company will present a diverse repertory of exciting premieres, dramatic new productions, revered classics, and repertory favorites. AAADT company member Hope Boykin's Go in Grace; an innovative collaboration with Grammy-Award winning female a cappella musical group Sweet Honey In The Rock, who will perform their original score live onstage with the dancers, will be performed in 10 different cities including Atlanta, GA and Newark, NJ. Acclaimed Italian choreographer Mauro Bigonzetti was so inspired by the dancers that he cast the entire company in Festa Barocca, his first world premiere for an American modern dance group, and one of the rare occasions to see all the Ailey artists together on the stage. A retrospective of Alvin Ailey's phenomenal choreographic career will be presented in a new Anniversary Highlights program that includes excerpts of over a dozen ballets.
