Nominations Announced For TUTS' Tommy Tune Awards Held 4/21

John C. Breckenridge, President and CEO of Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS), announced today the nominations for TUTS' seventh annual Tommy Tune Awards which will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. Developed by TUTS, the Tommy Tune Awards honor musical theatre excellence at the high school level. After reviewing and evaluating the 45 participating Houston-area high school productions during the 2008-2009 school year, a team of 29 Houston-based theatre professionals made 152 nominations in 15 categories.

EVERETT WARD Receives Honorable Mention In The Hand-Pulled Prints XIV Juried Exhibition, Exhibition Of Work To Be Held 5/1 - 5/31

Local artist Everett Ward of the Carnegie Arts Center has received honorable mention in the ?Hand-Pulled Prints XIV? juried exhibition in San Antonio, Texas. The exhibition is to be held at the StoneMetal Press Printing Center in Texas from May 1 through May 31, 2009. The piece entered and accepted is titled ?Light and Shadow #2?. Mr. Ward creates detailed realistic images in Lithography. The process is time intensive and requires mastered skills in lithography techniques. He has taught and worked at the Carnegie Arts Center for many years and has received several such recognitions through the years.

WaterTower Theatre (WTT) continues its 2008‐2009 Discover Series with the regional premiere of Roberto Aguirre‐Sacasa's comedy, Based on a Totally True Story. It will run April 16 - May 3, 2009. Ethan Keene, playwright and comic book writer, is on the verge of having it all - success, money, and a Hollywood movie credit. But getting to that Hollywood Premiere may be more dramatic than the movie. His father is having a marital crisis, his boyfriend is begging for more attention, and his producer is demanding a re‐write. Based on a Totally True Story is the story of one wanna‐be screenwriter's attempt to find his own happy ending before the final credits roll.

Jubilee Theatre continues its celebration of African-American culture with its 2008-2009 season and August Wilson's The Piano Lesson. An American icon, August Wilson depicted the human condition like no other playwright of his time. The Piano Lesson, the fourth in a cycle of ten plays chronicling the African-American experience throughout the 20th century, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Play in 1990.

Both Junior & Senior COMPANY, KVPAC's signature theatre club for advanced and experienced students, were offered the opportunity to attend a very special workshop for free at the beginning of 2009. On January 10th, Main Street Theatre Instructor, Alan Hutton, came to KVPAC to teach STAGE COMBAT. Stage combat is a specialized technique in theatre designed to create the illusion of physical combat without causing harm to the performers. It is employed in live stage plays as well as operatic and ballet productions.
RTC Invites The Labyrinth Theater To Share Their Stage

The Labyrinth Theater was another casualty of the times when it closed in February. Patrons were left with an incomplete season and no refunds for their tickets. However, the theater has recently received a temporary reprieve, and now season ticket holders and North Dallas supporters will have a chance to complete the season; The Richardson Theater Center has extended an invitation to the Labyrinth Theater to complete their season over at their space.

Circle Theatre, a professional, contemporary regional theatre company in Sundance Square, will begin previews of ART on March 19, 2009. ART preview performances are on March 19, 20, and 21 (matinee), and the show officially opens Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. Circle's production of ART will be accompanied by an art exhibit in the theatre's newly updated lobby gallery space, featuring works by artist Robert Beverly. Beverly works creatively with wood, glass, metal and concrete mediums.

WaterTower Theatre Closes 2008-2009 Season with the comic romp Unnecessary Farce WaterTower Theatre (WTT) closes its 2008-2009 season with Paul Slade Smith's comic romp Unnecessary Farce. It will run July 16 - August 2, 2009. Unnecessary Farce replaces the previously announced How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. In a cheap motel room, an embezzling mayor meets with his female accountant while two undercover cops wait in the room next door to videotape the tryst.

Theresa Rebeck (creator of the Alley?s success The Scene and Bad Dates) returns to the Alley with Mauritius. The title, Mauritius, refers to an island off the coast of Africa from which a now highly collectible stamp, described as 'the crown jewel of philately,' was issued in the age of Victoria. Like the Maltese Falcon, the Mauritius stamp is the fraught object of desire for an assortment of shady characters with different and mysterious backgrounds and motives, who move through the twists of the plot's crosses and double-crosses. Recommended for mature audiences. Mauritius by Theresa Rebeck and directed by Scott Schwartz begins Friday, April 10 and runs through Sunday, May 3 on the Hubbard Stage.

Uptown Players continues its eighth season with the Southwest premiere of The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife, running Friday, February 13 - Sunday, March 15, 2009, at the KD Studio Theatre. This production is under the direction of Cheryl Denson with music direction by Scott Eckert. Written by Del Shores, The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife is a tragic-comedy about domestic violence, set in small town trailer-park Texas. The play explores the lives of Willadean Winkler (Cindee Mayfield), her abusive husband J.D. (TA Taylor), her best-friend LaSonia (Laura Warner) and trashy cocktail waitress Rayleen Hobbs (Melissa Jobe). The play is scored around soul-soaring blues songs (sung by Crystal Ramon).

Trapped between the two is the delicate and isolated Laura.
