Groener, McGrath, Scalera & More Star In Sondheim's PUTTING IT TOGETHER At SCR 9/11-10/11
by BWW News Desk - September 11, 2009
South Coast Repertory kicks off the 2009-10 Season with Putting It Together, a compilation of Stephen Sondheim songs, that the composer put together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, creating a narrative set at a cocktail party in an elegant Manhattan condo. The non-traditional musical, led by Broadway and television star Harry Groener, has a cast of five (a glamorous but slightly jaded couple, a starry-eyed younger couple and a savvy observer) who sing more than 30 songs that reflect their lives, lifestyles and moods of the moment. Some of the songs will be familiar, some less so, a few were even cut from their original musical scores, but they are all sophisticated, smart and drop-dead droll. All, in other words, Sondheim.

REVIEW: When you sit down to watch the year-old national tour of LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL (now playing at the Orange County Performing Arts Center through September 28), you will find a wildly entertaining piece of theater, that not only brings a 'right now' vibe to the Broadway musical, it also provides two-and-a-half solid hours of infectious smiles, crowd-pleasing dance numbers, and a clever, memorable, smart-aleck score. The show is brought to life by an athletically-gifted, aesthetically-pleasing ensemble that's giddy from ear to ear.

Along the way, Elle proves that being true to yourself never goes out of style.

FUNNY BONES: Theatre Out's THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED is witty, with satiric bite
by Michael L. Quintos - September 02, 2009
The fear that coming out in public spells box office poison for a marquee-desiring actor is at the center of Douglas Carter Beane's THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED, presented by Theatre Out, Orange County's gay and lesbian theatre. The play, which received a Tony® Award nomination for Best Play in 2007, is chock-full of witty, Hollywood-insider laughs and a continuous barrage of funny monologues (even touching and poignant at times) from each character. This particular production of the hilariously written play, which originated as a workshop presentation at the University of California at Irvine, gives its foursome of actors plenty of great lines to deliver.
MY WAY: Swingin' and Swayin' Frank Sinatra Revue Continues Through August 23 at the Laguna Playhouse
by BWW News Desk - August 23, 2009
When Frank Sinatra passed away in May of 1998, America, it seemed, lost one of its most iconic and treasured song stylists. Sinatra in his day was one of only a handful of artists that transcended mere celebrity star status, thanks to a career that spanned film, television, recordings, and the stage. With a style often imitated (and at times parodied) even today, Sinatra popularized the Great American Songbook, thanks to his signature vocals and easy, confident persona. Many consider his recordings to be the definitive versions of any given song he touched.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF: Topol and Cast Faithfully Uphold 'Tradition' at OCPAC
by Michael L. Quintos - August 14, 2009
When a property as old and as sacred as FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is revived for new audiences, one would expect either a fresh, new take on a familiar show, or a disastrous series of experiments that disparages its source material. Neither is the case in the current touring production of the classic stage musical. For those seeking a safe, well-executed return to a good, old-fashioned book musical, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF fits the (play)bill nicely.
