Review: Going Backwards in MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG (Ends 3/7)
by Michael L. Quintos - February 11, 2010
Met with some of Sondheim's harshest criticisms (a rarity within his top-notch career full of well-received hits), MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG-his musical play told in reverse-is quite a challenging piece to take in. As Chance Theater's current production (performing through March 7 in Anaheim Hills), theater co-founder and director Oanh Nguyen certainly lived up to his theater's name and took a respectable chance on mounting a musical that may not be everyone's cup of tea. Though the source material seems like it Merrily Trudges Along, Chance Theater's production is buoyed by a collective creative enthusiasm that's wonderfully palpable and exuberantly infectious all throughout the show's performance.

Review: Solid Cast Elevates SCR's FENCES Revival (Ends 2/21)
by Michael L. Quintos - February 09, 2010
August Wilson's Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning FENCES, currently playing at South Coast Repertory through February 21, certainly has the pedigree of a respected, celebrated play-and it shows. In this hard-working, admirable revival directed by Seret Scott, Wilson's character study of a broken, flawed man and the people that envelope him, is fiercely grounded with raw, irrational emotions, which force the kind of remarkable, impassioned performances that only a cast this seasoned can deliver effortlessly-most notably Robinson, Jennings and Bates.

REVIEW: Musical Theatre West's SWEENEY TODD is Bloody Good (Ends 2/14)
by Michael L. Quintos - February 01, 2010
Musical Theatre West's incredible production of SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET transports you instantly to London, circa early 1846. This is no sunny fairy tale-life is bleak, poverty is rampant, corruption is the rule, and a devoted family man can progressively turn into a vengeful murderer and not even blink with the slightest of guilt. Thanks to top-notch production values (sometimes a lovely surprise with regional theater productions) and an impressive cast performing what is arguably Sondheim's most defining career-spanning masterpiece, this is one of Musical Theatre West's most spectacular musical offerings in the past few years.
