Chicago, IL – Under the leadership of Marilyn F. Vitale Artistic Director Avery Willis Hoffman and Executive Director Angel Ysaguirre, Court Theatre is proud to present August Strindberg’s Miss Julie, translated by Harry G. Carlson and directed by Associate Artistic Director Gabrielle Randle-Bent. This production will run from February 6 – March 8, 2026 at Court Theatre, 5535 S. Ellis Ave. The press opening is Saturday, February 14, 2026 at 7:30pm.

August Strindberg’s Miss Julie is a confrontation of class, gender, and desire at the turn of the twentieth century that’s as relevant today as when it was first written.

Miss Julie wants to abandon her upper-class, aristocratic life and escape the expectations that trap her. Jean, her servant, wants to climb the social ladder and rise through the ranks of society. Over the course of a wine-soaked evening, the two jockey for position, using sex, status, and strategy to collide and combust.

Associate Artistic Director Gabrielle Randle-Bent (A Raisin in the Sun) directs one of Strindberg’s most celebrated works, interrogating the limitations of politics and position, and the tension between who we are and who we want to be.

“Miss Julie is an indictment of the societal norms we all uphold, even at the expense of our most vulnerable or charismatic. We lose a lot when we all stay in the middle, and this play interrogates that cost without offering any easy answers,” shares Director and Associate Artistic Director Gabrielle Randle-Bent. “Set over the course of a Midsummer’s Eve—when the sun never sets and it feels like anything is possible—Strindberg's classic contains limitless possibilities, and I could not be more excited to work with this cast of Mi, Kelvin, and Rebecca to bring Miss Julie to life.”

Marilyn F. Vitale Artistic Director Avery Willis Hoffman adds: "Played out in real time with only three characters, Miss Julie is deceptively simple, but its depth, honesty, beauty, and brutality are astonishing. First performed in 1888, Miss Julie remains incredibly popular centuries after its premiere, thanks to its urgent and timeless story. I can't wait for audiences to experience this remarkable classic in our intimate space.”

The cast of Miss Julie includes Mi Kang (Miss Julie), Kelvin Roston Jr. (Jean), and Rebecca Spence (Kristine).

The creative team includes John Culbert (Scenic Designer); Raquel Adorno (Costume Designer); Keith Parham (Lighting Designer); Willow James (Sound Designer); Abhi Shrestha (Production Dramaturg); Sheryl Williams (Fight and Intimacy Designer); Sammi Grant (Vocal and Dialect Consultant); Becca McCracken, CSA (Director of Casting and Artist Cultivation), with Celeste M. Cooper (Associate Casting Director); Katie Moshier (Production Stage Manager); and Amanda Blanco (Assistant Stage Manager).
