Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte Hosts Auditions For DEAD MANS CELL PHONE

Actor's Theatre of Charlotte, 650 E Stonewall St, announces auditions for DEAD MAN'S CELL PHONE. DEAD MAN'S CELL PHONE will be directed by Ann Marie Costa.

Auditions for will be Sunday, February 20th from 1 to 6 pm with call backs on Monday February 21st from 6 to10 pm. Please plan to be able to hang around to read multiple times. DEAD MAN'S CELL PHONE will run April 1st through April 23rd with rehearsals in March.

Auditions will be by appointment only.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS FOR DEAD MAN'S CELL PHONE

A WOMAN, JEAN: late 30's, single woman (never married), intelligent, funny, has a slight quirkiness to her. There is an "insular quality" to her that is keenly aware of her aloneness. She creates confabulations. Jean carries on Gordon's legacy.

A DEAD MAN, GORDON: late 30's to early 40's, slightly cynical, self-aware because he is dead, a realist with regrets. When he was alive Gordon had a poor moral code. Gordon is The Commonality between all of the other characters.

GORDON'S MOTHER, MRS. GOTTLIEB: late 50's to early 60's, dramatic yet grounded in honesty, She is not very loving and is into herself. Direct, dry wit, angry, kind-changes moods quickly. She wears fur coats indoors. Through most of the show she is grieving her son's death.

GORDON'S WIDOW, HERMIA: 30's or 40's, a bit on the naïve side, has difficulty standing up for herself, settles for less, can be cool and distant. Through much of the play she is trying to make sense of why she stayed married to Gordon. She is seeking friendship and comfort.

GORDON'S BROTHER, DWIGHT: Gordon's younger brother (probably in his late 30's). He is jealous of his brother, a bit nerdy, often dismissed by his mother. He works at a stationary store. Dwight is seeking partnership.

THE OTHER WOMAN/THE STRANGER: (probably in her mid-30's but could be older or a bit younger) Gordon's mistress of eleven years. Also, poses as The Stranger. The actor needs two exotic accents: a worldly accent and an Eastern European accent. There is something very attractive about her.

A NOTE ABOUT THE PLAY

The play is a fantastical piece that travels between reality and eternity. Ruhl calls that eternity a sort of heaven/hell with laundromats. The connection between the two worlds is cell phone chatter.
