VOICEBOX/Opera in Concert's 40th Anniversary Season Closes with STIFFELIO, 3/23 by BWW News Desk
- February 20, 2014 The celebration of commemorative anniversaries for three great composers was the theme for VOICEBOX/Opera in Concert's own 40th Anniversary and the season closes with Verdi's STIFFELIO on Sunday, March 23, 2014 with a single performance at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts at 2:30 pm. This inflammatory work from 1850 concerns an adultery in the house of a Protestant minister and was so severely censored by the Italian authorities that Verdi withdrew it in 1856 and it was only intermittently revived – in various forms – in the 20th century. In 1992, scholars were given access to Verdi's autograph score by the Carrara family and the original version was produced at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on 21 October 1993. It is this version that VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert will be presenting.

Pacific Symphony's 'Symphonic Voices' Initiative Continues with LA TRAVIATA, Now thru 2/25 by BWW News Desk
- February 20, 2014 Led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, Pacific Symphony's vocal initiative, “Symphonic Voices,” continues with Giuseppe Verdi's thrilling but tragic tale about a dying courtesan willing to give up everything for love in “La Traviata.” Featuring the composer's exquisite music, presented in a uniquely staged production over three nights, the orchestra is joined by a cast of world-class opera stars; including soprano Elizabeth Caballero as Violetta Valéry and tenor Rolando Sanz as Alfredo Germont. Plus, the Pacific Chorale and members of the California State University Fullerton (CSUF) University Singers help fill the concert hall with exhilarating voices as Verdi's dramatic tale unfolds. While the selection of “La Traviata” as this year's opera is a tip of the hat to Verdi's bicentennial celebration, it is also a work that St.Clair is intimately familiar with—having conducted it while general music director of the Komische Oper Berlin.
BWW Reviews: Follow the Lieder, Part One--GERALD FINLEY at Carnegie's Zankel Hall by Richard Sasanow
- February 19, 2014 When I last heard bass-baritone Gerald Finley in New York, he was a nameless prisoner in a dungeon during the Spanish Inquisition, in Dallapiccola's IL PRIGIONIERO with the New York Philharmonic. But even the eponymous title character of that 12-tone opera seemed less tortured than the singer of Schubert's 'Die Winterreise,' which Finley brought magnificently to Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall last week.

BWW Reviews: A Fascinating PRINCE IGOR Finally Makes Back It to the Met by Richard Sasanow
- February 17, 2014 PRINCE IGOR was a glorious mess when Alexander Borodin died suddenly in 18, leaving it to others to finish a work he'd toiled on for nearly 20 years but hadn't quite made whole. With no definitive version of the opera, it was only performed by the Met in 1917--until Dmitri Tcherniakov's new production premiered last week. Musically rich, scenically fascinating, it's good to have it back where it belongs.
