Bard SummerScape 2014 Presents Weber, Schubert and Von Suppe, Now thru 8/10
by BWW News Desk - July 25, 2014
Reviving important but neglected operas is one of the ways the Bard SummerScape festival in New York's Annandale-on-Hudson has established itself, and this year's immersion in 'Schubert and His World' - culminating in the 25th-anniversary season of the Bard Music Festival - is no exception. To enrich its exploration of the roots of Austro-German Romanticism, Bard presents Euryanthe (1823) by Schubert's contemporary Carl Maria von Weber, marking the opera's first American revival in 100 years. Headlined by Ellie Dehn, Bard's original staging is by Kevin Newbury, creator of SummerScape's production of Richard Strauss's Die Liebe der Danae. Euryanthe's five performances (July 25, 27 & 30; August 1 & 3) feature the festival's resident American Symphony Orchestra under the leadership of music director Leon Botstein, who also leads semi-staged performances of Schubert's own seldom-heard opera Fierrabras starring Joseph Kaiser, best known for his leading role in Kenneth Branagh's film adaptation of The Magic Flute, on August 17, and of a double-bill of rarities - Schubert's one-act Singspiel Die Verschworenen and Franz von Suppe's operetta Franz Schubert - on August 10.

BWW Reviews: THE TSAR'S BRIDE a Heavenly Marriage with the Bolshoi Opera at Lincoln Center Festival
by Richard Sasanow - July 18, 2014
It's easy for opera-lovers to complain about the homogenization of casting at the world's great houses—particularly when there's only a small handful of Annas, Jonases, Juan Diegos, Cecilias, etc., that everybody wants to hear. So it was a treat to hear the visiting Bolshoi's concert performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's THE TSAR'S BRIDE last weekend at Lincoln Center Festival—filled with wonderful solo voices almost completely unknown to New York audiences, along with the stalwart Bolshoi chorus (under Valery Borisov).
OPERA San Antonio Presents FANTASTIC MR. FOX, 9/23-28
by BWW News Desk - July 17, 2014
Composed by OPERA San Antonio Artistic Director Tobias Picker, Fantastic Mr. Fox features a fox who will stop at nothing to keep his family safe. 'Fantastic Mr. Fox is full of tuneful arias and ensembles that you'll leave the theater humming,' says Picker. 'The Children's Chorus of Trees, featuring the Children's Chorus of San Antonio, watches over the antics of the Fox family and friends and the mean and selfish farmers, commenting like a Greek chorus. There is a soulful duet between Mr. Porcupine and Miss Hedgehog when they fall in love across a crowded room. And of course you'll see Mr. and Mrs. Fox lead the animal world in an elegant Fox Trot! I wrote this opera for children ages five through 115. There is humor and charm for every member of the family to enjoy. Please join us for this celebration of life and nature in song and a brilliantly illustrated and stunningly sung production.'

BWW Reviews: The Union Avenue Opera's Exquisite Production of LA TRAVIATA
by Chris Gibson - July 16, 2014
When you think of classic operas LA TRAVIATA is certainly one that immediately comes to mind. Composer Giuseppe Verdi (with a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave) created a wonderful piece that has stood the test of time, and when hearing it, you'll often find a number of familiar themes, some of which have appeared as background underscoring for cartoons, films, and commercials. It has all the elements that define our conceptions of what opera is: a superb score, the demand for inspired performances, and a tragic love story. The Union Avenue Opera has put together a memorable and moving production of this timeless work that demands your time and attention.
