BWW Reviews: Mozart's THE MAGIC FLUTE Gets A Modern Makeover For Children by Jade Kops
- January 03, 2015 Opera Australia brings back Julie Taymor's modern interpretation of THE MAGIC FLUTE, for the 2015 Summer Season. Translated to English by J D McClatchy, this version, originally created for the Metropolitan Opera of New York in 2005 gives the 18th Century story of the education of mankind a modern pantomime treatment.

Undoubtedly, John Adams's THE DEATH OF KLINGHOFFER, not only for the kerfuffle caused by the [unfounded] claims of anti-Semitism but for the opera's exciting debut at the Met. (The Met's contentious labor negotiations nearly edged it out, though.) As we head into the spring season, here's a look back at some of the performances that put a song in my heart, not in any particular order.

The company today announced its 2015/16 season, the first to be presented by General Director Aidan Lang, and a return to full-year programming with a total of six operas, including new productions and a world premiere. Under Lang's leadership, the company hopes to serve the community through the magic of theater and music in McCaw Hall, and in learning and engagement programs across the Pacific Northwest.
Heidi Stober Sings 'Gretel' at the Met This Weekend by BWW News Desk
- January 01, 2015 Heidi Stober will sing the role of Gretel in the January 1 and January 3 matinee performances of Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel. As previously announced, Aleksandra Kurzak sings Gretel on December 18, 23 matinee, 27, and 30 matinee, and Andriana Chuchman sings the role on January 8. As the Met's annual holiday presentation, the opera will be performed in English with family-friendly ticket prices and special weekday matinees.

- December 29, 2014 Janis Martin, American opera singer who sang leading roles first as a mezzo-soprano and later as a soprano in opera houses throughout Europe and the United States, has died at the age of 75. She was particularly known for her performances in the operas of Richard Wagner and sang at the Bayreuth Festival from 1968 to 1997.

- December 28, 2014 American opera singer Janis Martin, best known for stretching her range from a mezzo-soprano to a soprano star, has died. Having suffered from diabetes for years, she passed away at home in San Antonio on Dec. 14, her son Robert confirmed. She was 75.
