- December 19, 2014 Nearly a quarter-century after its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera, the monumental 'grand opera buffa' The Ghosts of Versailles, by composer John Corigliano and librettist William C. Hoffman, will receive its long awaited west coast premiere in a new production directed by 2014 Tony Award winner Darko Tresnjak. LA Opera Music Director James Conlon will conduct performances featuring the work's original orchestrations, heard for the first time since the opera's 1999 European premiere.

- December 18, 2014 The Dallas Opera has announced a partnership with the Music Academy of the West located in Santa Barbara, California, that will allow patrons from across North Texas to experience the artistry of the winners of the annual Marilyn Horne Song Competition as an added dimension of the popular Robert E. and Jean Ann Titus Art Song Recital Series. The Music Academy of the West is one the nation's premier summer training programs for gifted young classical musicians.
Lyric Opera of Chicago's Anthony Freud Discusses Vision by BWW News Desk
- December 18, 2014 Anthony Freud, 55, became general director in October 2011. In addition to directing the company's artistic and business operations, he has begun an in-depth strategic planning process with the Board of Directors, conceived of and launched the Lyric Unlimited initiative, and is forging important new relationships with a variety of other cultural organizations. Freud is the fourth general director in Lyric's 58-year history. Carol Fox, the company's founding general director (1954-80), was succeeded by Ardis Krainik (1981-97), who in turn was succeeded by William Mason (1997-2011). Mason is Lyric's first general director emeritus.

(90210), a contemporary adaptation of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, presented by LA Opera in its world premiere staging at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre from January 16 through 18. Showcasing Mozart's score with an entirely new English (and Spanglish) libretto by Vid Guerrerio, ¡Figaro! (90210) recasts the title character and his fiancée as undocumented Mexican workers in the present-day Beverly Hills mansion iof a real estate mogul and his actress wife.

- December 16, 2014 Sarasota, FL – Sarasota Opera is seeking enthusiastic outgoing people to serve as supernumeraries, or “supers”, the non-singing extras in opera productions, and acrobats for its 2015 Winter Festival Season production of Rimsky-Korsakov's fairy tale opera The Golden Cockerel.
Supers will take the parts of guards, servants, pages, and bizarre masked characters (unicorn lady, unicorn man, goat lady, goat men, etc.) Age range for these characters is from teenager to 60s.

- December 16, 2014 In anticipation of its February 20-22 YBCA Theater premiere of a new production of Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking, award-winning contemporary opera company Opera Parallèle will present a special free public event Wednesday, January 21, 7-8:30 pm at Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco. The evening will feature a discussion of the opera—which has had 40 productions, spanning the globe, in its 15-year history—and its controversial topic, the death penalty, along with performances of excerpts from the opera and other works. Opera Parallèle founder and Artistic Director Nicole Paiement and Creative Director Brian Staufenbiel will host special guests including activist and author Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking, which chronicles her relationship with a Louisiana death-row inmate, and which was also made into a celebrated motion picture; composer Jake Heggie, mezzo-sopranos Frederica von Stade and Catherine Cook, sopranos Kristin Clayton and Nicolle Foland, and Roslyn Barak, cantor of Temple Emanu-El.
