Brian Jagde, one of the outstanding tenors of his generation with a burgeoning international career, will make his Lyric Opera of Chicago debut performing the role of the painter/revolutionary Mario Cavaradossi in Puccini's fiery melodrama Tosca tonight, Jan. 24-Feb. 5, Lyric's general director Anthony Freudannounced today. Jagde replaces the previously announced Ukrainian tenor Misha Didyk, who withdrew from the production for personal reasons.

Stephen Costello scored a knockout in the title role of Romeo et Juliette at San Diego Opera five years ago. Now the Tucker Award-winner makes his Austin Opera house debut starting this Saturday with a reprise of his “electrifying” portrayal (San Diego News Network) in the same Doug Scholz-Carlson production of Gounod's Shakespearean masterpiece. Austin's three-performance run also stars Canadian soprano Joyce El-Khoury as Juliette and bass Peter Volpe as Friar Laurence, with Austin's Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Richard Buckley on the podium (Jan 24 & 29; Feb 1).

(WASHINGTON)—Washington National Opera (WNO) celebrates its seventh season of free opera simulcasts at Nationals Park with the M&M'S® Opera in the Outfield performance of Rossini's romantic comedy Cinderella on Saturday, May 16, 2015. Gates open at 5 p.m. for “pregame” activities for the entire family, and the opera will be broadcast live from the Kennedy Center Opera House to the high-definition NatsHD scoreboard at 7 p.m. Free seating will be available on the outfield grass and in the stands. Marcy Stonikas to Sing 'TOSCA' This Saturday for Seattle Opera

American soprano Marcy Stonikas will sing the role of Tosca at Seattle Opera's final performance of Puccini's masterpiece on Saturday, January 24. Lithuanian soprano Ausrine Stundyte, who sang on opening night and Wednesday, January 14, has withdrawn from the production after not recovering from a cold. Stundyte was originally scheduled to share the role with Mary Elizabeth Williams, who sang her own scheduled performance on January 11 as well as Stundyte's performances on January 17 and 21. Williams will also sing the Friday, January 23 performance, as scheduled.

Opera Atelier's 2014-2015 season continues with the Berlioz version of Gluck's Orpheus and Eurydice, a timeless love story based on the Greek myth. Opera Atelier most recently produced Gluck's opera in 2007, but this will mark the company's first exploration of Berlioz's 1859 version, in which the role of Orpheus is scored for a female contralto. Opera Atelier's co-artistic directors are proud that Tafelmusik has agreed to be part of this groundbreaking project, which marks the orchestra's furthest foray into 19th century orchestration.

In anticipation of its February 20-22 YBCA Theater premiere of a new production of Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking, award-winning contemporary opera company Opera Parallèle will present a special free public event tonight, January 21, 7-8:30 pm at Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco. The evening will feature a discussion of the opera—which has had 40 productions, spanning the globe, in its 15-year history—and its controversial topic, the death penalty, along with performances of excerpts from the opera and other works. Opera Parallèle founder and Artistic Director Nicole Paiement and Creative Director Brian Staufenbiel will host special guests including activist and author Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking, which chronicles her relationship with a Louisiana death-row inmate, and which was also made into a celebrated motion picture; composer Jake Heggie, mezzo-sopranos Frederica von Stade and Catherine Cook, sopranos Kristin Clayton and Nicolle Foland, and Roslyn Barak, cantor of Temple Emanu-El. Mexican tenor Rodrigo Garciarroyo will perform the leading role of Giuseppe Hagenbach on January 30 (opening night), February 1 and 4, 2015. Tenor Arnold Rawls will sing the role for the final performance scheduled on February 7, 2015. The singers are assuming the role after Carl Tanner recently withdrew, due to illness.

Thirteen years after its concert premiere with the New York Philharmonic, New Yorkers finally saw a fully staged production of Rodion Shchedrin's opera THE ENCHANTED WANDERER. The Mariisnky Theatre began its two-week residency at the Brooklyn Academy of Music with a one-night only performance of this rarely performed opera. Director Alezei Stepanyuk's production, despite some interesting elements, did not did not live up to Shchedrin's fascinating score. Still, the Mariinksy's presentation of THE ENCHANTED WANDERER proved to be one of the more interesting operas in New York so far this season.
