TURANDOT Returns to the Met This Month

He sang a selection of Puccini arias, including 'Nessun Dorma' and also was the first German to sing "Rule Britannia" in the history of 'Last Night of the Proms' performances.

The Metropolitan Opera will open its 131st season on Monday, September 21 with a new production of Verdi's Otello. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts his first Met opening night, a staging by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher of the late Verdi masterpiece based on Shakespeare's tragic drama of jealousy and deceit. Aleksandrs Antonenko, who has starred as the doomed Otello around the world to acclaim, makes his Met role debut opposite rising Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva in her first-ever performances of Otello's innocent wife Desdemona. Željko Lu?i? adds a new role to his company repertory as the evil Iago, as do Dimitri Pittas as Iago's pawn Cassio and Günther Groissböck as the Venetian ambassador Lodovico. Sher's staging will feature scenic design by acclaimed designer Es Devlin in her Met debut; costume design by six-time Tony Award winner Catherine Zuber; lighting design by two-time Tony winner Donald Holder; and video design by Luke Halls in his Met debut.

Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Presents PINES OF ROME, 9/17

The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera begins its 2015/16 season on Thursday, September 17th at 7:30pm at the Tivoli Theatre with a powerhouse work, Respighi's Pines of Rome, on a Masterworks program based on nature and the great outdoors. The night begins with big sound with Dvorak's Carnival Overture. Barber's Knoxville Summer of 1915 is a lush, richly textured work that is set to James Agee's Pulitzer Prize-winning book, A Death in the Family, and paints an idyllic, nostalgic picture of Chattanooga's neighbor. Soprano Mela Dailey will perform this work with the orchestra. Modern composer Christopher Theofanidis' enthralling Rainbow Body brings mysticism and mystery. Closing the concert is Respighi's Pines of Rome, a symphonic poem paying homage to the long-standing pine trees throughout the city of Rome. Music Director Kayoko Dan begins her fifth year leading the CSO. All ticketholders are invited to a post- concert Postlude event in the Tivoli lobby for a meet and greet with Music Director Dan and select musicians. Free sparkling wine is available. Barnett and Company sponsors the Masterworks Series.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's The Magic Flute has always been one of the most beloved works in the operatic repertoire, and is presently the third most frequently performed opera worldwide. Containing some of the last music written by Mozart before his death at age 35, the opera contains many well-known arias, including The Queen of the Night's “Revenge Aria” from Act 2 with some of the highest notes required of any singer in any opera.
