Victoria Opera House Brings Classical Music To Young Audiences With An Experiential Format

Manhattan-based soprano by way of Westchester County, Victoria Miningham, is a professional opera singer and entrepreneur with the ambition to share her passion of classical music with her peers. In September of 2017, Miningham produced an event in Manhattan at the members-only club, Soho House, that set the stage for what later became Victoria Opera House (VOH). This inaugural event presented a mix of opera singers from around the world including Miningham to perform almost a dozen classics.  Since then, there have been two standing-room-only events at the popular Club which targets millennials in creative industries.

Baruch Performing Arts Center and Fresh Squeezed Opera will co-present the NYC Premiere of composer Huang Ruo and librettist Bao-Long Chu's one-act chamber opera Bound in a new production by Ashley Tata. Lyric Opera of Kansas City Announces Explorations Series Production PENELOPE

General Director and CEO Deborah Sandler today announced the final production of Lyric Opera of Kansas City's 2018-19 Explorations Series, Penelope, a groundbreaking song cycle based on The Odyssey, as told from Penelope's point of view. Composed by Sarah Kirkland Snider, Penelope was named one of the five best genre-defying works in 2010 by National Public Radio. The performance, featuring conducted by Carolyn Watson and directed by Alison Moritz, will be held March 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Lyric Opera's Michael and Ginger Frost Production Arts Building. The famous mezzo soprano Fredericka von Stade is in San Diego this week rehearsing Three Decembers, one of several works written with her in mind by her close friend Jake Heggie. The chamber opera for three singers and 11 musicians will be performed three times next weekend at the 500-seat Patrick Henry PHAME Theatre. Von Stade recognized Heggie's talent long before he wrote his first opera and has been an influential champion ever since. Their friendship and collaboration have benefitted both. In my interview with her in a San Diego Opera rehearsal room she said, 'He's given me a second career with parts in Dead Man Walking and Great Scott, and a lot of song cycles. He's my guy.'

Posing as a concerned friend, Iago preys on the general's insecurities, deftly planting seeds of doubt and steadily stoking the flames of blind rage, until Otello arrives at a devastating point of no return. Andre Previn - of Opera and Classical Music, as well as Hollywood, Broadway and Television - Dies at 89

Composer, conductor and pianist Andre Previn has died at the age of 89 on February 28. Previn was composer of the opera versions of Tennessee Williams's A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE and Noel Coward's BRIEF ENCOUNTER, dozens of orchestral works, film scores, jazz works and the score for Tom Stoppard's 1977 play, EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR. He was also music director of the Houston Symphony, LA Philharmonic and the Pittsburgh Symphony, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra.

But the return of the wonderful production, with the great Met orchestra under conductor Richard Farnes and an all-around terrific cast, brought a little sunshine into the gray winter in New York.

Canadian Opera Company Announces New Opera For Toronto Programming

The Canadian Opera Company is bringing opera to new places and spaces with Opera for Toronto. The free programming initiative aims to introduce new audiences to the art form, with a special focus on opening up the COC's operations and rehearsal space, the Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Opera Centre at 227 Front Street E., to neighbouring communities.
