American Repertory Ballet To Perform Works By Paul Taylor, Mary Barton And Kirk Peterson

American Repertory Ballet (ARB) returns to The Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College (68th Street between Park and Lexington avenues) for one night only with a sensational triple bill on Saturday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. The program, "American Made: Works by Paul Taylor, Mary Barton and Kirk Peterson," showcases the company's strength and versatility.

PROGRAM:
Tears of the Moon, choreography by Kirk Peterson

Trois Voix (three voices), a world premiere by ARB resident choreographer Mary Barton

Airs, choreography by Paul Taylor

The evening opens with Kirk Peterson's beautifully expressive Tears of the Moon, set to Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata," which "highlights the sparkling technique, beautiful neo-classical lines and speed of ARB's dancers," says Artistic Director Douglas Martin. Peterson had a distinguished 17-year career with American Ballet Theatre as a principal dancer, choreographer, ballet master and Artistic Director of ABT II. His choreography has been seen with San Francisco Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Washington Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, BalletMet, San Francisco Opera and The Royal Ballet School. His newest ballet, Beauty and the Beast, will premiere this spring.

The program also features the world premiere of ARB resident choreographer, Mary Barton's newest work Trois Voix (three voices). Set to Poulenc's Trio for Oboe, Bassoon and Piano, Martin notes, "Ms. Barton's unique musical brilliance brings the humor and whimsy and haunting beauty of this delightful music to life." As a dancer, Barton's credits include soloist and principal dancer with the Washington Ballet, Oldenburg Staat, Joffrey Ballet, Cleveland Ballet, and American Repertory Ballet. As a choreographer, her works include Straight Up with a Twist, Five Men and a Concerto, Faerie Tyme, Fantasy Baroque, Shades of Time, A Shepherd Singing (And I Still Heard Nothing) and Scarlet Sonata.

American Repertory is honored to celebrate the life and work of Paul Taylor with its performance of his great masterpiece, Airs. "His ingenious and innovative style, movement and musicality influenced generations of dancers and choreographers and he leaves a legacy of more than half a century of work for future generations to explore," says Martin. "Mr. Taylor's work had a profound effect on my early career and it has long been my dream for the dancers of ARB to have this experience." Paul Taylor, one of the most accomplished artists this nation has ever produced, helped shape and define America's homegrown art of modern dance from the earliest days of his career as a choreographer in 1954 until his death in 2018.
