'It was a year ago that Hurricane Sandy hit Brooklyn's coastline, leaving in its wake a path of unprecedented death and destruction. My staff and I walked through flooded streets across the borough and spoke with scores of business owners who had lost everything. The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce wasted no time in helping those business owners fill out loan and grant applications as well as navigate the process.

Alphabet Arts to Present Puppets & Poets Festival, 12/6-12/8

Puppets & Poets is a festival that explores and celebrates poetry and puppetry, two of the world's oldest and most diversely practiced art forms. The third annual festival features poets, puppeteers, musicians, actors, dancers, and other artists from NYC, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Austin in an evening cabaret program for mature audiences and a family-friendly matinee program. Matinees are free, interactive, appropriate for all ages, and followed by poetry-writing and puppet-making workshops. Highlights of this year's festival include The Folk Art Opera by San Francisco poet/musician Annie Bacon and her band with puppetry by Alphabet Arts; a David Bowie-inspired rock adventure called Spacetansmananagasm by Austin actor/puppeteer Zeb West; and Blown Away by Poetry, an interactive puppet musical by NYC's Urban stages. Both the evening and matinee programs include exciting and eclectic performances blending puppetry, poetry, and other arts.

For almost four decades, Jean Paul Gaultier has shaped the look of contemporary fashion with his avant-garde creations and cutting-edge designs. The Brooklyn Museum will be the only East Coast venue for The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, the first international exhibition of this celebrated French couturier's work. On view in Brooklyn from today, October 25, 2013, through February 23, 2014, this spectacular overview of Gaultier's extensive oeuvre will include exclusive material not exhibited in previous venues of the tour, such as pieces from his recent haute couture and ready-to-wear collections and stage costumes worn by Beyonce.

Brooklyn-based skybetter and associates performs an evening of contemporary dance repertory with live music by the Ear Heart Music Ensemble, making their debut in this concert. The program includes Temporary Matters set to selections from Jóhann Jóhannsson's Englabörn; Cold House You Kept set to String Quartet no. 2, Quasi una Fantasia by Henryk Górecki, and the New York premiere of Eveningland, Skybetter's recent commission by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, featuring selections from David Lang's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Little Match Girl Passion. Flutist and Ear Heart Music director Amelia Lukas will lead the ensemble in Karen Tanaka's ethereal Frozen Horizen, setting an icy yet uplifting tone for the evening. The performance will take place in the round.

First-of-its-kind $1.1 Million Eco Dock Opens On The South Brooklyn Waterfront

Parks Commissioner Veronica M. White today joined Council Member Vincent Gentile, Chief of Staff to Borough President Markowitz Jon Paul Lupo, Assembly Member Alec Brook Krasny, Council Member Domenic Recchia, Council Member Peter Koo, President/Chief Executive Officer of the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance Roland Lewis and District Manager of Community Board 10 Josephine Beckmann, to cut the ribbon on South Brooklyn's first Eco Dock, a floating dock that rises and falls with the tide and has minimal impact on the surrounding natural resources. The $1.1 million Eco Dock was designed to be resilient in the event of a storm surge, and is the first in the city to provide both educational programming through 'floating classrooms' as well as recreational boating opportunities. After the speaking program, students from Bay Ridge Prep, John Dewey and Fort Hamilton High Schools boarded the schooner Pioneer for a tour and a waterfront education program.
