BAM Black Comix Expo Celebrates Comics Of Color

The showcase will feature over 20 comic exhibitors, a panel discussion with writers and social activists, a children's art workshop led by artist Akinseye Brown, and a superhero cosplay showcase for fans of all ages.

PICTURE THIS! is a new show from Brandie Posey & Sam Varela: two girls who want to push the boundaries of what a comedy show can be. Picture This! is a live comedy show with stand-ups performing while they are drawn live by some of the best animators, cartoonists, and other artists around! Picture This! was started in Los Angeles almost four years ago and since then has traveled to New York, San Francisco, Portland, New Orleans, Denver, Iowa, Indiana, Toronto, New Zealand, Australia & more! The comedians don't know what the animators are drawing and the animators don't know how the comedians will react.

Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy will present A Night of Philosophy and Ideas, a free sunset-to-sunrise event bringing philosophers, musicians, artists, and authors from around the world in conversation with the Brooklyn and Greater New York community at the historic Central Library at Grand Army Plaza from 7PM to 7AM on January 27 28. This year's edition commemorates the 50th anniversary of the global 1968 student-led protests and will explore how collective action can inform public affairs and daily life, and motivate national and international change.

Gallery Players will begin 2018 with William Finn and James Lapine's A New Brain. It is an autobiographical musical exploring illness and the healing power of art. A New Brain features music and lyrics by William Finn; book by William Finn and James Lapine. The show started as a concert at The Public Theater in 1996, then premiered Off-Broadway at Lincoln Center in 1998, directed by Graciela Daniele and featuring Malcolm Gets. In 2015 City Center presented A New Brain in their Encores! series with the cast headed by Jonathan Groff.

In February, the White Horse Theater Company, which has produced several rarely seen Williams plays such as A Perfect Analysis Given by a Parrot, In the Bar of a Tokyo Hotel and I Can't Imagine Tomorrow, will present a unique & immersive production of the Tennessee Williams dark comedy A Cavalier for Milady at the historic Players Club at Gramercy Park (16 Gramercy Park South) with performances on February 7 at 8pm, February 8 at 8pm and February 9 at 7pm and 9:30pm. The 2/7 show will be followed by a WHTC 15th Anniversary Celebration with a live jazz performance and the 2/8 show will be followed by a moderated talk-back with renowned Tennessee Williams scholar Dr. Annette J. Saddik.

The Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation will celebrate the 17th anniversary of its signature branch, the Asase Yaa African American Dance Theater (AYAADT), with an innovative, revitalized dance production to premiere at Peter Norton Symphony Space on Saturday, February 3, 2017 (located at 2537 Broadway at 95th Street in Manhattan, New York). The full length performance, entitled An Ananse Tale, will be the highlight of the evening and will follow a closed reception for VIP guests and a special pre-show event billed as #AsaseYaaJourney, a festival-like experience for all ticketed guests that will take place in the foyer of the venue. Visually Vibrant, Under the Tangle, follows an adolescent girl who becomes ensnarled in a labyrinth. Throughout her journey, she twists along the brambling pathways being confronted with obstacles, finding numerous clues and meeting many unusual characters: a flock of birds, the daunting labyrinth guards, and the Queen of the Lost perched upon a grim tower. As a metaphor for adolescence, this visual and artistic adventure is a journey of obstacles, relationships, and discoveries, which strengthen the heroine's character, and eventually set her free from the labyrinth.

Queer Art, the NYC incubator for LGBTQ artists, is pleased to announce the Winter/Spring 2018 season of Queer Art Film at IFC Center (323 Sixth Avenue at West 3rd St.), January 8-April 9. Curated by filmmakers Ira Sachs and Adam Baran, the season consists of four films not to be missed, presented by NYC performers and filmmakers, as well as a special presentation by the Queer Media Database Canada-Qu bec. Queer Art Film charts a uniquely queer cultural lineage through cinema to other artistic disciplines by inviting LGBTQ artists to present and discuss films that have inspired them.
