Philly Choreographer Annie Wilson Returns to JACK With 'At Home With The Humorless Bastard'
by BWW News Desk - March 12, 2018
Philly favorite choreographer/performer Annie Wilson returns to JACK with At Home with the Humorless Bastard: an exploration of personal and collective grief that shifts the audience's perspective by bringing them onstage and casting them in the dance. Through the piece, she asks whether immediate and deep intimacy with a stranger is possible, and, if not, whether adding nudity, glitter, or amateur renditions of Charles Manson songs would help. Wilson takes aim at social structures that both allow and inhibit the deep connection many are aching for, constantly, relentlessly, like a low-frequency hum that's a little unsettling in the bowels. The Humorless Bastard pokes at those structures, letting them fill up with water, turning the volume up on that hum.

The Brick Theater, Inc. and Rosie DeSantis Present LETTERS IN THE DIRT
by BWW News Desk - March 08, 2018
Immersive and surreal, LETTERS IN THE DIRT places its audience face-to-face with the insightful Aiyana Jones- a seven-year-old girl fatally shot by police in 2010 during a botched raid in Detroit, now a symbol within the Movement for Black Lives. Structured like a game-ritual, the show lands it audience in a mysterious purgatory the night after Aiyana's killing, where they are greeted by a chorus of black children, invited to play a game, and provided objects that were once a part of Aiyana's life. To "play," the audience must use their objects to guide her through her memories to an understanding of her death. Participants learn her favorite playground games, and dream aloud with her about if "we was all free." All while celebrating black imagination and vulnerability, LETTERS IN THE DIRT creates a vibrant, intimate audience experience personal to all who participate.

Mariana Valencia's COVERS, SINGLES, SHOUT OUTS Comes to BAX
by BWW News Desk - March 05, 2018
Mariana Valencia's performance Covers, Singles, Shout Outs is an in-progress research that examines authorship by questioning what gets carried into her work through the modes of proximity, relation and alliance. Through this process Covers, Singles, Shout Outs seeks to manipulate perceptions of life and its collaborators. The work is sourced from various popular and cultural alliances and this particular ensemble of sources builds a choral surround of references. The work proposes a lens for observation that positions our personal and cultural attachment to objects and subjects, and why (or, if?) we choose to live among them. In Covers, Singles, Shout Outs, Valencia invites the audience to traverse a dense field of collective reference.
