I think that the set for ACT ONE was last year's best set:

I really loved the NEXT TO NORMAL set.

All those pictures look stunning, especially ACT ONE and FOLLIES. It's a shame that I never made it to see those.

re: Favorite Set Designs

I do love this thread.

Probably the most impressive set I have seen is the one Ming Cho Lee designed for the play "K2" The setting is a ledge at 27,000 feet, 1,250 feet below the summit of K2, the world's second highest mountain. The audience gasped when the curtain went up. The wall of the mountain climbed past where you could see it and extended way past below stage level so it looked like it didn't end. One of the actors had to climb the wall, that was literally straight up and down, past the curtain line a couple time each performance. At one point in the show there is an avalance and a ton of rocks and snow fell. It was truly a breathtaking set. Did anyone else see it?

K2 looks incredible! What theater was that?

One of my favorites of past seasons was The Shaggs for its shear inventiveness.

K2 was at the Brooks Atkinson.

The new Phantom (US National Tour) set is absolutely ingenious, as was Pippin revival's. Sunday in the Park and Into the Woods are some of the prettiest. Starlight Express is just downright incredible, though.

I'm VERY enamored of the sets in the current Gigi revival. Otherwise, I love Bullets Over Broadway, Newsies, Phantom on Broadway, and Peter and the Starcatcher's sets.

I don't think there are any pictures online, but the set for Soho Rep's An Octoroon was pretty stunning. Deceptively simple, but brilliantly used, and it contributed to one of the most breathtaking effects I've ever seen on stage.

Paramount 's Les Mis is designed by Kevin Depinet, who is far and away one of the best designers working today.

The set for the Paramount Les Mis:

re: Favorite Set Designs

I didn't see this production, but I heard something about the set looking cool, but it got in the way of the staging.

Kevin Depinet was also the designer for the Iceman Cometh revival recently at BAM, and that set was beautiful as well.

The staircase on that Les Mis set looks a bit gimmicky (and just because it's different doesn't mean it's a good idea) but the costume design is gorgeous.

Wish I knew how to post pics--

As impressed as I am with Scott Pask's THE VISIT set, it's one set with no changes that stays put for an hour and a half. It gives a way its gifts in the first ten minutes.

By contrast, Bob Crowley's staggering series of sets for the new AMERICAN IN PARIS is an ever-changing feast for the eyes and the heart. I'd sit through the show over and over again just to see the miracles that set pulls off. It should win every award in sight come May/June.
