StardustsChild said: "Max is wonderful in the role! He and Sutton have captivating interesting chemistry; I really like the May-December dynamic they have found, and his scenes with Winthrop pull heavily on the heart strings (there was an audible sigh of pleasure through the audience when the young actor rested his head on Max's shoulder). Marian the Librarian was a particular delight, as Max positively soared through the choreography with plenty of energy left over to spar with Sutton.

He dances the hell out of the role, and his voice is also strong, although the sound design was all over the place, with his mic nearly muted during group numbers and ensemble mics turned up to 11. I have seen many, many productions of The Music Man over the years, and Max is one of very few who make me actually believe in the heel turn for the finale; you really feel his Harold fall, in spite of himself, for Marian, and the look he gives her when he says "for the first time in my life, I got my foot caught in the door." made me tear up.

Rush tickets are plentiful; don't miss your chance to see Max's wonderful performance!

Thank you, Mrs Clayton!

Really nice interview with Max:

https://www.broadway.com/buzz/202365/the-music-mans-max-clayton-on-catching-a-train-to-swiftly-step-into-hugh-jackmans-beast-of-a-role/

I didn't know he played the part in the developmental lab since Hugh wasn't available then. Makes sense that he fits the role well and has good chemistry with Sutton. (I wasn't sure I like The Music Man enough to want to see this production, even with Hugh, but this almost makes me want to...maybe.)

I got a rush ticket row H orchestra, in the sides very close to center about 20 minutes before curtain today.

if you want to catch this, I’d go while Hugh is still out. Man, is this musical dated and awful. But Max was lovely and thank God for Sutton Foster, who is the only real reason to see this, IMO.

@Dollypop LOL hardly, although I hope his family does make it into town. Big week for the Clayton/Doyle household.

Foster just posted on IG she has tested positive again and will be out for the next ten days. Sounds like they're alternating who plays Marion.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Does anyone know whether Remy Auberjonois, whom Sutton kisses eight times a week on stage, has ever tested positive for Covid? I would not be surprised if he too tests positive in the coming days, although I hope not. He is delightfully curmudgeonly and irascible as Charlie Cowell.

He probably tested positive during late December/early January. Didn't like half the cast get it then? If I understand it right, theirs was one of the bigger outbreaks during the giant wave.

Remy was out with Covid in mid-March. Hoping that means he's got a couple of extra months of immunity compared to Hugh and Sutton.

Someone well known filling in while he's out on scheduled filming breaks. They haven't announced who but the rumor is NPH

I just wish they would use Max those two weeks so tickets would be cheaper. With Neil they don't have to. Sigh.

I wish they'd use Max too. He was wonderful with Sutton and made the show accessible for those who wouldn't normally be able to see it. The two times I went the Orchestra was full.

The producers are trying to make their money back and a profit.

Have Neil fill in for those two weeks and then jump into the show during the Holidays/Winter to close it out for 3-4 months.

Although the show's grosses dropped a bit during Max's run, it was still one of the top 5 money makers that week. Do they expext NPH to do better?

Not exactly a bit, It dropped by 46% ( from $3.3 M to $ 1.8 M) but the musical, no matter that it is a revival of a show from 1957, still held the support of a good number of theatregoers. NPH vs Max in terms of audience appeal - hard to say which one could draw more people to the Winter Garden. But if it is only for the 2 week-long Jackman breaks in August & September, why not just go along with Max who showed he was quite a competent replacement?

Pror to the Tony Awards I suggested something I wish had become a reality. Since the Tony Awards claimed they'd be celebrating understudies, swings and standby's, I thought it would be magnanimous of the stars to introduce  the musical numbers but the understudies would actually perform them.

Alas, it's too late for that now...

Saw The Music Man" this Wednesday at the matinee, Show was great even with multiple understudy in roles, Max Clayton was in as Marcellus, and of course Sutton Foster was out.  During intermission, the lady next to me was gushing about how good "Sutton" was doing !  She didn't realize it wasn't her, but probably not the only one, as when Marian appears the first time, there was some pockets of big applause.

Well, I’m cursed. Our tickets we purchased in January 2020 eventually ended up on June 21 - the day before Hugh returned. We switched them to July 5th - the day before Sutton returns.

Like others have said, I love understudies and think they are extremely talented. However, I’m not going to pay Hugh/Sutton prices for an understudy.

All of that to ask: can I exchange tickets again? Can I do it online/phone so I don’t have to train in to the city?

When Hugh was out we received an email notifying us we could exchange but nothing for Sutton. Any insight is appreciated!

Unfortunately, the only reason you received an email was because Hugh is above the title.  Yes, Sutton is on the artwork but she is below the title.  Based on that, Tele-Charge nor the box office will issue you a refund or exchange.  2 different friends were both told this when they tried to get refunds/exchanges when they tried this past week at the box office.

Understandably, refunds/exchanges were offered for Sutton's first COVID absence in December, but that was at the very beginning of the run. 7 months in, I guess they figure that it's the luck of the draw, and they no longer need to offer that courtesy.
