Based on all of the musicals and revivals we had this season, what do you think each will or could perform at this year’s ceremony?

I'd love for Caroline, or Change do "Lot's Wife" followed by "Salty Teardrops" (SUCH AN UNDERRATED SONG).

Six will do "Ex-Wives" followed by "Six"

Company will do either "Being Alive" or the title song. "Side by Side by Side" for the last revival performance was a horrible choice IMO.

A Strange Loop will be "Intermission Song" and/or "Inner White Girl"

I would be rather surprised if Caroline or Change performs at all.  (Has anyone heard that they are?)  It's a lot of expense especially when it won't translate into ticket sales.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

They’re pretty much a lock for a Revival of a Musical nomination, so yes.

Sure, but that might not necessarily mean that Roundabout is going to shell out the money to do a performance. If they were to perform, which I would like, Lot’s Wife would be the most cost-effective option.

Would Flying Over Sunset perform, even if they don’t get nominated?

My Predictions:

Six- Ex Wives into Six; Company- The last few verses of Ladies Who Lunch and into Being Alive, OR the title number; A Strange Loop- Intermission Song; Music Man- Medley that showcases Shipoopi and 75 Trombones; Funny Girl- Don't Rain On My Parade

COMPANY might actually have the three guys doing "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" or just have LuPone do "Ladies Who Lunch" in its entirety.

Yeah a Music Man medley sounds right. They’ll probably highlight Hugh with one of his big two numbers, have Sutton come on most likely with Till There Was You, then have Jackman close it out with his other big number, probably 76 Trombones as already said.

Company I’m really not sure about. The title number, Being Alive, Ladies Who Lunch, Side By Side, and Not Getting Married Today all feel like they’d be great, but none of are the perfect choice to highlight the show. It probably will be one of the first two. I’d personally be ecstatic if they did Not Getting Married, but it has no Patti, and barely any Katrina. Ladies Who Lunch meanwhile then has the inverse problem of only having them (and Terrence Archie). Patti’s also been recorded doing it plenty of times including for this production, so even if it’s their best showcase for her, there’s fresher options.

Six most likely will go down the same route as their Olivier performance yeah, first and last numbers. That feels pretty certain.

I’m gonna guess A Strange Loop goes for Intermission Song, it gets the show across pretty well, it’s fun and bouncy but not without depth, and I don’t believe it would need much censorship.

Funny Girl is definitely gonna end with Parade, but they’ll likely try doing a medley as well. Given Beanie’s divisive reception, I’m guessing they want to show more than just her.

I unfortunately don’t know Caroline or Change well enough, I was wondering if they’d perform or not, but I’m gonna take a guess that Clarke has a solo that wouldn’t require too much remounting they could do.

Not to mention Roundabout already has a history of not having closed shows perform. They did not have a Drood performance and they had a cast recording to promote of the show but did not opt to pay for performance.

Shows that get nominated don't just get to perform. They still have to pay to do so. They only thing they get is they are assured a slot should they want it. Non nominated shows have to apply for a slot to perform and could be denied should there not be space for them to do so.

I don’t think they’d do You Could Drive a Person Crazy (though it would be a fun performance), but it wouldn’t actually be lacking in Katrina. I imagine if this was their choice, they would be able to have at least some of her spoken intro to the song, and she’s present and active in this version’s staging. Actually more so than she is in Ladies Who Lunch, where she’s stationary and subtly taking in the performance, this song has her moving around and more overtly reacting throughout.

Yeah I know she's on stage and has that line where she says "i'm ready to be married" but other than that she doesn't sing or anything. I would imagine they would want her to be highlighted. Being Alive into Ladies Who Lunch could be cute.

I hear what is being said about how its likely closed musicals won't perform. However, I do have to wonder if in this particular year, Roundabout and LCT will want to participate in and have a visible presence in the first Tony ceremony post-shutdown. They also both are doing well financially (per an article from a month back or so about how they successfully utilized their gov funds), so I can see either or both companies wanting to perform.

Especially since both Caroline or Change and Flying Over Sunset have cost effective solo numbers sung by their stars. Sharon D Clarke is a likely winner of Lead Actress and could stand on stage alone to sing "Lot's Wife." Ditto Carmen Cusack (who is sort of "on the bubble" for a nomination at the moment, but could definitely show up), who could sing a portion of the title song, or "How?" Perhaps just wishful thinking since I would love for these two performances to be committed on film to return to for years to come. I do think the leadership of each organization will at least consider it given that this is the comeback season for Broadway

If “Paradise Square” wants to sell tickets, they’d get Joaquina performing “Let It Burn” on the talk show circuit ASAP and showcase the dancing in “Oh Susanna” on the Tonys, especially if AJ Shivley or Sidney DuPont get nominated. The exciting dance numbers sell tickets to the tourists, which are the way to keep the show alive.

I think “Funny Girl” could do “Rat A Tat”, a Beanie-led number that features other string elements of the show. From many, they’ve said it’s one of her best numbers and the dancing is one of her strengths.

With “Company”, the title number makes the most sense BUT letting Patti do all of “The Ladies Who Lunch” could also be a moment.

I’d love for “Six” to take the opening or closing as framework and give each queen about 16 bars of their solos.

I’m not sure what “Mr. Saturday Night” could do, but the act one finale makes the most sense to me. “Intermission Song” makes the quickest sense for “A Strange Loop”, and I think “MJ” would likely do a medley if it gets nominated.

What would “Girl From The North Country” do? I know “Like A Rolling Stone” or “Dusquenene Whistle” are highlights, but I think “Slow Train” or even “Pressing On” would be strong.

So what can we expect from our newly-minted nominees? lol.

Girl from the North Country
MJ
Mr. Saturday Night
Paradise Square
Six
A Strange Loop

Caroline, or Change (will Roundabout set up a performance?)
Company
The Music Man

And could/should any shows or stars perform, including host Ariana DeBose having some big performance moments ala Hugh and NPH?

Girl from the North Country: "Pressing On" would be thrilling.

MJ: "Thriller" is obvious to me, but they may want to do multiple songs to really highlight it.

Mr. Saturday Night: I think this show would benefit from showing some of Crystal's standup. Maybe the opening? I can't remember the name of the song but he would tell jokes between verses.

Paradise Square: "LET IT BURN." Hands down. You have a powerhouse moment, show it off.

Six: "Ex-Wives/Six" it's tried and true.

A Strange Loop: I think the opening really sums up what they're putting out there. Not sure what they'll go with or how it will come across on television.

Caroline, Or Change: Not sure if they'll reunite to perform. But even if they can't get the cast together, let Sharon D. Clarke do "Lot's Wife." It will blow everyone away.

Company: They could go Hadestow style and give the time to Katrina to sing "Being Alive." But they probably won't. The opening is likely.

The Music Man: I wanna see them do their finale in their uniforms singing and tapping up a storm.

A Strange Loop is performing Inner White Girl this week on The Late Show, so that’s my guess still. I never got to see Sharon’s “Lot’s Wife” so I’m excited to experience that (I had Sharon Brown). I could see MJ doing a montage of songs.

Also unrelated but I just wanted to share that my friend and I got tickets to the Tonys. I could cry I’m so excited.

I'm sure Ariana will do some opening number. This is just my stupid ideal, but I'd love it if she brought out David Alvarez to join her. On the topic of things I want but will never happen, I wish the brief stint of doing scenes from the plays would come back.

Also, yeah MJ feels likely to do a medley, that seems to go to for jukebox shows, and they probably want to show Frost can cover MJ's catalogue with multiple songs than just one.

I wonder if Funny Girl pays their way into doing a performance. Given it's single nomination it would be awkward, but I wonder if they'll try to make sure their production doesn't miss out.

Company –– Something tells me we get a medley. Side By Side into Ladies Who Lunch into Being Alive? Company will definitely be angling to be part of an In Memoriam dedication to Sondheim, too.

The Music Man –– a number constructed for the broadcast, with a bit of Hugh doing 76 Trombones into the finale.

Caroline, or Change –– Lot's Wife (if they even perform) will be more economical to just have Sharon alone.

SIX: The Musical –– opening number.

A Strange Loop –– Opening or Inner White Girl?

Girl From The North Country –– Medley

MJ –– Medley

Mr. Saturday Night –– something involving Billy's standup, maybe even without a song?

Paradise Square –– something that showcases the dance

as for shows that aren't nominated, if any of them can get a slot...

Funny Girl –– A medley that includes Don't Rain On My Parade

Doubtfire –– the act 1 finale

for colored girls? Diana?

We'll prob also get some performances from Ariana DeBose (incl. a group opening number), a big Sondheim/In Memoriam tribute, and who knows what else.

A Strange Loop - Maybe the opening?

Company - Most likely 'Company'

Girl from the North Country - A medley.

MJ - Haven't seen the show, so I can't say for sure; definitely something that highlights the choreography.

Mr. Saturday Night - I could see them doing either 'Unbelievable' (a full-company moment) or 'A Little Joy' (possibly with some improv stand-up from Billy Crystal).

The Music Man - Either 'Ya Got Trouble' or possibly 'Goodnight, My Someone' leading into 'Seventy-Six Trombones'

Paradise Square - I could imagine them going with one of the big dance numbers, but 'Let It Burn' would definitely be a better choice.

Six - 'Ex-Wives'.

If Funny Girl performs, I could imagine some kind of medley (definitely showing off Jared's tapping) and potentially 'Don't Rain on My Parade'.

I don't know if Mrs. Doubtfire will perform (they could if they want to show off Rob McClure), but if they do there's about three or four different numbers that could work.

Has it been said whether performances will be recorded from their theatre (like last year) or performed live at Radio City? If it's the former, and Caroline, or Change performs, then I could certainly see Sharon D. Clarke doing 'Lot's Wife' live. If Caroline, or Change doesn't perform at all, I definitely see it being acknowledged with a highlight reel (like Roundabout's Edwin Drood revival, if I remember correctly).

That's a good question and I have no idea. I have mixed feelings about both methods.

By recording from their theatres, the shows can put on a more polished performance and have less hassle on Tony night. They can show off the actual set/lighting design, and the sound mix is better. But for Covid exposure purposes this year, it may be for the best.

But then you're dealing with pre-recorded content for the majority of musical performances in a celebration of LIVE theatre. There's an added emotional adrenaline when performing AT Radio City on the night of. You don't get a performance as thrilling as Patti LuPone in GYPSY if she records that a week in advance at the St. James. You don't get the audience interactions of Beetlejuice (one of the better recent Tony performances) if it's recorded ahead of time.

The main reason for the live from each show's respective theater last year was because the Winter Garden couldn't house multiple shows' sets, not COVID concerns. With this back at Radio City, you can likely bet they'll be in person at the ceremony.
