Thinking of coming over in a few weeks, which is the best spot for these 2 shows.

I am thinking the front half of the mezzanine?

I am more interested in taking in the spectacle for both than seeing everything up close.

Thoughts for those who've seen them?

Cheers! x

Haven’t seen west side story, but moulin rouge! is so intense I think the orchestra is the best place to see it. I saw it in the mezz and it was great, but I know a few people who’ve seen it in the orchestra and they said it was better than the mezz.

For Moulin Rouge you don't want to be too close to the stage. I'd say starting from the 5th row, center orch, up to the overhang...or first row mezz.

Don’t sit in Row C, directly in front of the passarelle. Stage height is not a problem, but you won’t realize until you’re walking to your hotel how much your neck hurts from looking up. It is fun during the pre-show when actors stare at you while walking about, and I got poked in the chest by Danny and called filth. Oh and there was one very flirty chorus boy who flashed us his white tights bulge under his tutu. That was cool. And it seemed like Karen was going to land in my lap on her first (or second?) descent on the trapeze.

But what a snooze of a show and I wouldn’t pay $3.49 to see it again let alone $349. I thought the music and the staging during the curtain call was the best part. I can watch that for free on YouTube. But that’s not what you asked so I’ll hush up.

Also, depending on budget, standing room is a great view.

I saw Moulin Rouge! in September from Row K Left Mezzanine and had a great time! However, I grabbed a Center Orchestra Row E seat (thanks to dynamic pricing) for next Tuesday. I’ll try to remember to report back here about my experience compared to the mezzanine.

Regarding WSS, I sat Row E 1 Right Orchestra. It was amazing to be so close, bit you miss some footwork. I’m seeing it next Friday (night after opening!) from Row F Left Front Mezzanine. I will also try to report back on how that seat compares to my Orchestra seat.

Yes prices for MR seem pretty ok for the next few weeks particularly the Thursday matinee which is great for cramming an extra show in and I found a deal for WSS as well so neither will break the bank.

I think Six is gonna be the killer now especially if the reports on here are anything to go by, I'm sure the prices will jump up.

I've also seen MR from the row K left orchestra. Great seat, full view, but next time I would prefer to see it from the front mezzanine. Same for WSS. I was in the seat M21 which is the extreme right of the orchestra. Although not obstructed and you could see everything happening on the stage, I think the perfect view is from the mezzanine because of the video projector and tall stage.

I saw it from mid mezz and also center row J, which I think was a house seat. It was about 6 rows back from the little front outcrop stage whatever that's called. That seat only showed up for sale the morning of the second time I went. It was sensational from both seats.

I sat in Orchestra Center Row K which is right where the overhang starts and I found it to be perfect. You get the full view of every aspect of the set and they spend a lot more time on that catwalk than I thought they would. So everything seemed very close and intimate even though I was several rows away.

I saw WSS from Orchestra Row D and missed everything that happened on the ground(footwork, lying down, etc). I don’t plan to see this again but if I did, I would buy a mezzanine seat.

I sat second row Mezz, center right second seat in from the aisle and the view was perfect. I will just say that we were even a part of the spectacle in those seats.

I was in third row center mezzanine at Moulin Rouge tonight and it was heaven. Couldn’t have asked for a better view, close enough to see the cast’s expressions clearly yet just distanced enough to take everything in.

I wouldn’t recommend the production, but as PatrickDC noted, that wasn’t your question. You may very well love it.

Moulin Rouge! - anywhere in the first ten rows of the center orchestra or the front mezzanine

West Side Story - Mezzanine, but avoid the rear mezzanine. The choreography is so insanely beautiful, and it best viewed from the mezzanine IMO.

Haven't gotten over to WSS yet, but based on the theatre, I'd say close orchestra or mezz.

For Moulin Rouge, it's 100% worth it to sit in the orchestra.

Also depends on the attendees' heights.  If on the short side, mezzanine definitely.  The little slope helps greatly.

I have seen MR three times, once from tenth or eleventh row center; once from row S on the side; once from front mezzanine, I think Row E two seats off the aisle, but side.  I loved the show all three times.  I felt, however, that the mezzanine was best, partially because I had no issue with heads in front of me, partially because I personally always think dancing looks better from the mezzanine, partially because I think it provided the most sweeping views of the stage.

I will say that I am 5'11" (shrunk from 6'1"Best place to sit for Moulin Rouge/West Side Story, and had to move constantly to see around the tall fidgety person in front of me when I had the 10th or 11th row of the orchestra.  Less risk in the front mezzanine.

I have not seen WSS, but will admit that I bought in the orchestra, only because I was trying to keep costs down, and am gambling that my $79 tickets in M19 will be acceptable.  Since there are 6 or 7 seats further to the side, for most shows this would be a fine seat.  Not sure re WSS, based on the comments, but seat M17 was $159, so I figured that I got a great deal.  We shall see.  Had it not been for my cheap streak, I would have gotten front mezzanine, although I do feel that the front mezzanine seems very far from the stage in that particular theatre.  I do believe the dancing -- based solely on part experience -- would be better served, however.

Saw Moulin Rouge! from orchestra row M on the aisle in Boston and in the mezzanine row D center at the Hirschfeld. They were both great, but I think I liked the mezzanine a bit more, you get a fuller stage picture.

For West Side Story, I was in row E of the front mezzanine and I thought it was perfect. You could see the incredible choreography and the screens weren't overwhelming. The rake is pretty good, so unless someone in front of you is really tall, it shouldn't be an issue. The Broadway is a barn, but I think this is the one time that it works to its advantage. Cannot wait to see West Side Story again - it was breathtaking. I think it, Moulin Rouge! and Company will be the major awards contenders this spring.

The best place to sit for Moulin Rouge is center orchestra. I sat 7 rows back in the center and it was perfection. Not too close (front row is insane) but still close enough to make out all their expressions. Fun show, enjoy!

Moulin Rouge? At home, on your couch, watching the DVD. This show is terrible! Such a huge disappointment and waste of money. I was excited to see how they reworked the music and story, but what a lackluster take. The book is terribly written, and the actors have zero character development. No love story. We literally almost walked out. Sad thing is that this will probably run for a long time because it’s an audience pleaser.

I’ve sat in both front orchestra and front mezzanine for both and I agree for your first trip to both, I’d recommend front mezzanine.

We were fifth row center orch for WSS, and while we usually like to sit close, I felt that was too close. I'd probably go back to at least row K to get the full scope of the stage, or front row orchestra, even better.

We were row K on the aisle, right orch, for Moulin Rouge and thought it was a fine seat!
