The MPAA may have "rules," but the biases of the C.A.R.A. members rating the film will pretty much override those rules. It's mostly subjective, and quite frankly, arbitrary. Rebel Wilson has talked about how she appealed the testing for The Hustle by comparing scenes in PG and PG-13 films to the then-R-rated film.

The whole ratings system is ridiculous. Even so, this will really only appeal to teenagers and adults, so there is no need to censor.

Fine with me. It's just a few words and I doubt Disney wants to release this with an R rating, which it would have to do if it left them unmuted.

It's not like the time one of my community theaters put on '1776' and completely removed all the profanity. It was still a good show but it did change its nature a bit...

If The Hip-Hop Project can have 17 uses of the f word and not have an R rating, then so can Hamilton. I think they could easily have two versions, one for those who don't want to hear profanity and those of us who want to hear the original material.

If anything, the ratings system for PG-13 movies has gotten more lax in the last decade. There are a ton of PG-13 films in the last decade with more than one f word. Hamilton's two uses, even mother-----, are not used in a sexual context. "Sit down you fat mother-----" and "Mother------ democratic republicans" do not to me imply sexual context.

Here's an insightful article about The Martian and how it navigated the PG-13 waters. Warning there's a lot of f-bombs in the article. https://www.polygon.com/2015/10/22/9592366/The-martian-rating-****

There were plenty of other companies wanting Hamilton that would not have censored a word, it's unfortunate he sold it to them because of his working relationship with Disney, but it makes sense. At least the DVD/BluRay won't be touched.

Lol he sold it to Disney because they offered $75 *MILLION* dollars, the most expensive film acquisition in history.

People here really get hung up on bleeping 3 f-bombs in a 2.5 hour show? If this allows more people to see the show, then that's good? Do the f-bombs add so much added value to the show? Probably not.

Its art, it shouldn't be censored. Many companies wanted it for slightly less money, but he wants to keep making Disney money, which isn't surprising, he's been all about money for about years now. Shame.

I'm pretty sure the magic of Hamilton has nothing to do with two f-bombs in the show and that the show will still be perfectly fine without it.  If it can reach more people this way, then who cares?  And if somebody offered me $75 million and all I had to do was take out two f-words in something I'd written?  Yeah, I'd do that in a heartbeat.

ESPN (owned by Disney) is allowing users to choose between a TV-14 or TV-MA version of each episode of the massively popular documentary The Last Dance -  the only difference being that certain words are bleeped. Seems like wishful thinking, but I would hope they'd offer something like this on Disney+. They could protect their family friendly brand, but also keep the text accessible in its uncensored form.

I would be quite happy if the whole thing was muted---couldn't understand a word anyway-totally overrated and self-indulgent.

I don't know why people are so up in arms about this. I'm part of a facebook group and someone who is "in the know" said it will be show as filmed. I don't get all the hysteria about censoring and everything.

If a parent is exposing their kids to a two and a half hour rap musical about American history, you'd have to assume their kids at an age where they can tolerate a couple of f-bombs.

I know I am just a random guy on the internet, but my wife replied to the announcement email asking if it would be censored so she could show her school class and they replied “It will NOT be censored. It is the musical as presented on stage.”

Hallelujah. We all know how a handful of bleeps would change the entirety of the musical film experience.

/sarcasm.

That's how I feel about those "school editions" that are created. If you can't present the show as written,  then don't do it.

That said,  I would take any social media or email replies with a grain of salt. They have no idea how it's going to appear on Disney+. LMM has stated that none of the content would be cut,  and that might be what is being affirmed. Muting a word here and there might not be considered censoring by those operating Disney's social media accounts.

How is that possible? Her role impacts several scenes/songs.

That's clearly a lie posted by someone trying to get people talking. It's a non event and Hamilton won't be censored.

It has been confirmed that there will be no changes to the audio as originally recorded.
