I’m sure Scott Rudin could’ve gotten something close to 75 million had he filmed Hello, Dolly, but alas....

Fat chance. Maybe $2 million and a profit-sharing deal for a release in a specialty markets by a studio that wants to stay in his good graces. Bette Midler does not have that type of mass appeal nowadays beyond live performances. It cannot be overstated that Hamilton is a once-in-a-generation musical.

Now, if he had filmed MORMON with Rannells & Gad in 2012? Maybe. But he still wouldn't have got as much money as Hamilton.

If I remember correctly, the issue was with Leslie, who ended up doing the recording.

Do we know for sure that it's an open ended release and not a one day only showing?

I also read it as showing on the 15th only, which is a Friday.

And I'm also puzzled about them announcing it this far in advance. It's almost two years from now.

OBC cast-member Betsy Struxness had evidently called out or left the production prior to its filming, and she has LOTS to say about that:

She sounds very bitter about it. I mean if all the leading roles are still in it is it still considered an original Broadway cast with *just* a Broadway company? Is the way it's being marketed by LMM on Twitter as the OBC just a way to hype it up? I never got a chance to see Hamilton's original company because of how ridiculous the prices were, but as long as the leading roles are actually the original cast, I could honestly care less about who is in the company.

That’s kind of her point. The erasure of the ensemble, who are some of the most important aspects of a show. Not too mention she was involved in the development, and her signature look is now copied for her track across every company, a look they developed based on her and her style.

They were just as much a part of the magic of the OBC. Words matter.

Emmy Raver-Lampman, another OBC member who isn’t in the film hasn’t said anything about it yet. Wonder if she feels the same.

Simple enough to brand it as "featuring the original Broadway stars" if there's going to be a fuss about it. Or ignore and nobody in the general public will know or care.

The question is... did they leave the show on their own before the taping? If so, oh well...  And, did they have the opportunity (like Groff) to come back for a week?

But yeah, most people are going to stop caring beyond the featured players.

I remember reading about this tape before it was announced it would be on the big screen. Jonathon Groff had left the show by the time of taping, but he came back specifically for the taped performances, so he should be appearing.

So if they're calling this a movie, does this mean it's fine to call the OBC a soundtrack? Kidding! (Kind of.)

I can't imagine this is $75M for a movie alone, especially one that Disney had no original hand in producing. Disney rarely if ever does acquisitions, so there must be something else included in the deal.

OFFS so do they have to display a disclaimer that reads: The Original Broadway Cast , except these performers who played:  .....in the original Broadway cast but are now being played by: ......in this taped performance.

Well, this is gonna make a lot more than $75 million, and I imagine there’ll be other money besides the box office, as Disney could probably make their own Hamilton themed merch off of this

I'd venture to say this might hurt their box office somewhat. I'd say the only musical still running that wasn't affected by their movie is Phantom.

Just tell them yes, he will play Hamilton in the film, but he will be wearing a cat suit and meowing the songs.

Rent, Phantom, Hairspray, and Chicago all saw increases in their box office after their respective film adaptations were released.  I remember reading that The Producers was the only show that didn't benefit from its theatrical film. Even Legally Blonde saw an uptick in ticket sales (though it wad minuscule compared to the aforementioned shows.

I don't know how the filmed performance will do with the general public, who probably will have different expectations for a movie, but I'm happy they're doing it this way. I always was skeptical about a film adaptation, because Hamilton just seems like such a theatrical experience (including the suspension of disbelief required) and I could never figure out how it could work as a movie. I also don't know what is meant by the description of some sort of hybrid film/theater experience. We'll see. And I wish I felt better about America right now. Perhaps things will improve by next year.

But as with many musicals, it's thrilling just to think of seeing those performances again (including Miranda's, who was out sick the night I saw it). Everyone is going to get to see Daveed Diggs' brilliant performance. Renee Elise Goldsberry in "Satisfied." The whole cast, really. We always wish that original casts in beloved shows had their performances recorded in their primes. Because Hamilton has been such a blockbuster, this is a rare chance for it to happen

Live theater has a thrill that films can't quite match, but movie musicals can do things that live theater cannot (closeups, different angles). I do hope that whatever tricks are done for the film, that there's a straight-up version included in the set that would just be a single camera that doesn't move. One of the most impressive things about seeing the show from the rear mezzanine of the Richard Rodgers was seeing all the lighting work and choreography that is actually more striking from a distance - along with Leslie Odom Jr. singing to the folks in the rafters in "The Room Where it Happens." I've seen some other terrific Burrs, but that's still my favorite moment in a Broadway theater.

There are plenty of things about seeing the OBC of Hamilton that I still remember nearly 4 years later. I think it's terrific that all those people who couldn't afford tickets, and in most cases still can't, will get an opportunity. Miranda isn't doing this to be charitable (he'll make plenty of money on this) but this is a win-win.

No, but “Original Principal Broadway Cast” wouldn’t be so hard. I understand Betsy’s frustration and I’m glad that others from original company are speaking out on her behalf as well. She was continually disrespected throughout her time with the show, and now again years after she has moved on from it.

Well aside from acquiring our entire childhood...but in terms of individual projects, it's a Disney rarity. So there must be something else in the deal.

It is annoying that on the radio this morning they were saying, "A Hamilton movie is coming! And it's with the original cast!" Literally no one except people that tend to look closer are thinking, "I wonder if it's the filmed version of the stage show."
