Alright... The Theater Wing can do better. But, I do love Broadway, so it feels personal.

You’re probably the first person to ever call it a “trophy”. What is this, a bowling tournament?

It is a trophy! Okay...Tony Award (now it sounds like something froze the Westminster Kennel Club). What would you call it? And, do you like the little engraved plaque on the front?

It's called a statue.

What plaque/quote are you referring to? Genuinely curious; Google didn't help me (the plaques in the photos. just state the name of the award and I can't imagine you're bothered by that). What is this "things remembered" quote?

A statue...ok. But the little plaque on the front is (really it is) very similar to a bowling trophy. I doubt the Academy Awards or Emmys use a ‘double stick tape engraving plate’ as part of their award, statue, trophy.

That's exactly what he's referring to, the award name plate.

Yes, the Tony Award which has been around since 1947 (ish) needs a facelift.  Who wants some traditional old thing in their home to gaze at.

And by the way....nearly every award has them - although they are often put on the statues after the awards show.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Thanks...I think I’ve seen the other major awards (maybe not). The engraving plate on the front of the Tony just doesn’t look as classy as the Oscar or Emmy. I love live theater and respect the amazing work the winners put into their craft...it’s too bad the engraving plate on the front of the award looks unfinished. One person’s opinion.

This is silly. All major awards have an engraved plaque that says the category and name of the winner and they all look the same "quality."

You usually carried the award around for the night and sent it back into the organization to be engraved. Now the Oscars do it onsite back stage. Here's a clip of Regina King getting hers done this year.

That is actually very cool, and I’m sure you are correct. That said, look at the engraving plaque on a Tony... it doesn’t look as finished as the Oscar. Just an opinion.

Little known fact. Most Tony nominees who don't win are relieved cause they don't want a trophy with such a cheap looking nameplate soiling their beautiful homes.

Indeed, I refused to ever appear on Broadway for fear of winning one of those tacky trophies.

Another little known fact -- most Tony nominees do not live in "beautiful homes."  They share cramped 1 bedroom apartments with 2 or 3 roommates in Inwwood/Morningside Heights or Long Island City.

I know that you're joking, but this is an actual quote from a 1988 New York Times Magazine article about Patti LuPone:

In the den, where her Tony Award - ''the stand is plastic!'' - shares a shelf with her Olivier from Britain, Matt Johnston is watching a hockey game.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

I know that at least at one point Boyd Gaines actually didn’t keep his Tony Awards in his home in NY. He sent them to his mother’s house in California.

It is not like they are sports stars like Tiger Woods or Roger Federer and need a room by itself to place all their awards. I am sure even in cramped apartment they can handle a few awards. Even if the award looks "cheap", it is still the honor that goes with it that is important.

The category and winner's name and show are engraved on the backside of the medallion. I think they're referring to the silver engraving on the front of the marble base that says "tony award."
