I read those Frozen threads a lot (it's one of my favorite shows for a variety of reasons) and I was disappointed to see all the negativity in there. I think that a lot of people over stepped from all sides. But the main thing I pulled away from this was that.... we don't want to turn into stan twitter. I'm more active there than I am on here, but some of the stuff that I've seen on there... the bullying, the rudeness, the lack of understanding... that's not what BWW is. I haven't been here for a particularly long time but I always felt like this was a place where I could come and have a more mature discussion about theatre than I could on twitter. What happened in those threads (now deleted) wasn't that. Let's practice what preach and try to be kind, yeah? (on all ends, for all parties involved)"

Oh gosh, don't even get me started on stan twitter. You say one thing they don't like, you express your opinion on something one of them disagrees with, you support a casting decision and they descend on you and make you feel like garbage. It literally is the most toxic thing I've ever seen. The amount of bullying, the way they don't care about hurting people, the way they act SO superior to others, the way it has turned into this clique. They feel like they own shows and are best friends with performers. I'm sorry, but unless they have spent time with those actors outside of the stage door and online interactions, hate to break it to you, but you're not friends. I'm so so frustrated that not a lot has been done to address how superior these people think they are to other fans who love shows. The amount of bullying that happens through stan twitter really has to be addressed. It makes me so mad.

That is fine for you and happy you feel that way.  I, on the otherhand, when paying those high prices for tickets, expect to see the cast that i bought the ticket for.  If not, they can issue a refund.  It has nothing to do with entitlement. "Be thankful for seeing the show".  No and no.  If it was a free ticket then maybe yeah.  But that is not I how to choose to spend my hard earned money.

Who are you responding to?

I messaged him but receivedno response, which is understandable, so I will repeat my questions here.

I just want to connect with other Frozen fans and share my love for this show on here but every time I do that the thread gets locked or removed altogether. I understand this is important in moderating the board and now that some of the users who were the ones who instigated these uncivil conversations have left the site this may no longer be a problem. However, I want to talk about scheduled absences and when understudies are on because I like to spread the love for understudies and I know others appreciate knowing who will be on for the performance they are seeing. How can I do this while avoiding the uncivil conversations that could provoke a moderator to lock a thread?
"

I'm sorry, but aside from official announcements saying certain shows have cast alternates (DEH comes to mind), I don't believe an audience is ever entitled to know if a lead is out or not. You pay for the ticket, you come to the theater to see the show, and if a lead is out, that's how it works. You're not entitled to knowing that. I remember this also happening with Audra in Shuffle Along. An announcement was made for her as well as to when she would not be performing, and I think My Fair Lady did this as well. Aside from those exceptions, I'd go into a show with the expectation that I will see a great show. The sense of entitlement that we have developed is really sad. Has anyone considered that actors could get in trouble with the production? Get your ticket, see the show, and be thankful.
"

Get the actors in trouble?! How? This makes no sense. Do you honestly think the production isn’t aware when an actor doesn’t go on stage? Do you think producers are like “let me go on twitter and see which one of my actors skipped the show today”? Thats just non-sense.

Also, understudies are actors with feelings too, some people like to see a show when the understudy is on. There’s even a twitter account just for announcing when understudies are performing.

Yes, that is correct.  When I posted for whatever reason the quote disappeared.  I was too lazy to go back and correct it.

Well then perhaps you should stick to going to the movies, where you know the actors will be the same every time?

Okay but honestly - where did everyone go? There are people who haven’t posted in days and I miss their insights.

This whole argument is pretty ridiculous. Actors are a huge part of the draw for a show, hence their names being on the marquee. Not to mention headline articles on sites like this when casts change. Not to mention reviews that specifically call out performances. Not to mention an entire awards season that honors specific actors and what they brought to their roles.

To suggest that a show is identical regardless of who’s playing a role is ludicrous. Plenty of people, myself included, often go see shows precisely because of who’s in it.

HA. Of course they were deleted, yet his verbally abusive death threats are still around these threads.  Gross. Yes, I wish YOU a Happy and Healthy New Year!  smiley

"I also hope that if we see something really awful- like a Home for the Holidays for example- that we can’t write about it without a healthy dose of humor. Like, could I not write, “Bianca Ryan only hit three notes all evening and all of them were wrong?” Does that become a “personal attack?” To just say she missed a lot of notes doesn’t express my level of disdain enough. I’m not saying she should be tortured and murdered for her performance, but are we still allowed to have some fun? Theater criticism has had a loooong history of snark intertwined with it- just watch All About Eve or read old decades of modern theater reviews. I just hope this doesn’t sanitize things too much, because that would be a real shame."

I really hope so too as your reviews are one of the best things on this board (as divided as everyone seems to be, this seems to be something most can agree on).
