I just came back from tonight's performance. Stephanie is in good shape and gives a fine and powerful performance. Cant say I really liked the show because...well, the script is a bit of a mess. Yes, the costumes and choreography are fun and I wouldn't say that i was bored or didn't have a reasonably good time, but I just think that Cher's story isn't really all that interesting.

The script does feel like a Wikipedia event that really kind of glosses over her life. Are we really never going to deal with her relationship with a trans daughter? Beyond her being a baby she doesn't exist in this production. We know that Sonny dies and it involved a tree but come on, he was a US Congressman from California and existed well on his own. When Cher goes to broadway would it be such a crime to even mention the name of the show that she is in? (Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean."THE CHER SHOW Reviews The show didn't last but she gave a great performance as a trans woman. Now wouldn't that have given some weight to the reIationship with Chaz? saw it back in the day and she was really quite good.

Greg Allman feels like a sidenote as well. He died last year and struggled with drugs his whole life. A rather fascinating artist who feels like a prop here as well. There just wasn't much depth due to the three Cher concept which really gets tiresome. So all in all, a very disappointing show that was entertaining enough. I just thought that Rick Elice who brought us Jersey Boys, which is still the gold standard for these kind of shows, would have brought greater skill to create this story. As I said, I just don't think her story is interesting enough unless you're a total Cher fan but for a broadway show I just think we deserved more. I kind of agreed with the critics on this one.

One final note, why don't we start a thread for opinions of shows that have already opened? I find the preview thread and the review thread and we kind of pile onto this one. Thoughts? I was gonna do that this time but was afraid that I would get my head chopped off by some of the BWW self appointed police on this site :)

If you do search carefully on this same board, you’ll find the answer. And stop stanning this show.

What's "stanning"?  Is that like a mashup of "staining", "scanning" and "fanning"?  Did I honestly miss something?

Karen Black played the transwoman, not Cher.

Come Back to the 5 & dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean.

WaytoBroadway... what the hell is stanning?  Stephanie was out I’ll for 3 or 4 performances. Reviewing this board I did not find anything stating her return to the show. The only reference was from tonight’s review 12/15/18 giving me the answer to my question. Why so sarcastic? Were you even aware that Dee Riscolli (spelling.) went on for Stephanie for several shows!

Are we really never going to deal with her relationship with a trans SON? Beyond HIM being a baby HE doesn't exist in this production.

I fixed your mistakes.

Based on the central character in the Eminem song of the same name, a "stan" is an overzealous maniacal fan for any celebrity or athlete.

Bravo to The New York Times for sending a reviewer who gets it.

Thanks for clarifying, Inception.  May I be your stan?

It sounds like you're advocating for a show that's less about Cher and more about everyone else in her life.

Supposedly, it's a blend of "stalker" and "fan."

Hmm.. I think I'd prefer "Falkering"

The biggest thing this show has against it from an audience perspective is the number of older queens singing Cher's music out loud during the show. And I mean out LOUD. Apparently there's a new karaoke bar that opened up on 52nd St. at the theater Hairspray once played.

But other than that, I echo what many have said here. I had so much fun, and the show isn't trying to offer up anything else but sassy, campy, colorful fun. It knows what it is and it does it well. I personally enjoyed it much more than other biographical jukebox shows like Beautiful and Jersey Boys.

A new thread would be completely unnecessary. Reviews are opinions of shows after they've opened, so the existing thread should suffice. Adding another one would just confuse things.

I know its been asked before, but any updates on the status of a potential cast recording? My guess is that if they havent announced anything yet, its probably unlikely although that would seem surprising...

I find it odd there's no word of a cast recording as well. I know I'd buy one immediately.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I'm not sure how you woul do a cast recording as the majority of songs in this show are partial bits of the songs. There is only a handful of full songs performed.

I swear Stephanie tweeted a while ago that there would be one and to stay tuned. I hope this is still true! I would love a cast album as well.

I think they should record the show live like the On Your Feet recording.

As great as a studio cast recording of this show would be, I completely agree that a live cast recording would be phenomenal.  Just to hear the continual excitement of the audience from start to finish!

Watched both BroadwayCon segments on YouTube yesterday, the latest episode of "It's Always Sonny", with Jarrod Spector and some kind person also posted the first eight minutes of the show that I think has since changed a bit because I didn't see anyone wearing sailor uniforms.  It amazes me how much work they have really put into this show, and how much work they still are continuing to do...

At the panel discussion at Broadwaycon this weekend, the cast said changes were always happening. Stephanie J. Block mentioned she was going this week for a costume fitting for the show.

Stephanie also said that they were making changes to the show as late as 4:30 in the afternoon on opening night...that has to be exhausting!...

If it's the clip I saw, it looks like that opening is the Chicago out of town tryout version of the opening. It looks very similar to what I saw. I saw it about midway through the Chicago run.

On Your Feet was the most poorly produced cd and those who produced it should be embarrassed.  It is an example of how NOT to record a live representation of a musical.

I wish I knew what to make of this show after seeing it. It's almost hard to call this a show instead of more like a revue where 3 versions of Cher sort of...narrate bits of her life story with occasional song snippets and fourth wall breaking commentary (as well as conversations between the narrators). Just a really bizarre show if it can even be called that. I think that by the second act, I had just gotten used to the format and started to enjoy it a little more but I definitely spent the entire first act thinking to myself "WTF am I watching?"

The performances were all solid, but...just a really strange take on a biographical musical.
