Tony Roberts just announced on sandy land on Radio Andy that the R&H organization is planning on having Carousel replace The King and I once it runs out of steam.
I would hazard to say this is still not "known". King and I is playing at (and produced by) Lincoln Center. The Rogers and Hammerstein estate do not make producing decisions for Lincoln Center. More importantly, Lincoln Center has produced a landmark revival of Carousel (via The National Theatre).
EchoParker, if you're going to speak matter of factly about the Rodgers & Hammerstein Org, you could spell Richard's name correctly.
Fair enough. Color me embarrassed.
I also feel bad about laying on so much snark if all the OP is talking about is sending the Lyric production to Broadway. I obviously took the word "replacing" literally.
I would have rather seen the recent Stratford Shakespeare Festival production of Carousel transfer to Broadway. Though they did record a cast album at least and it's now one of my favorites of the many Carousel cast recordings.
This production does not belong on Broadway. The production was boring, the choreography was less than great and a bit inappropriate for the setting, and the entire time I felt as though something was missing. If Carousel is headed back to Broadway, I hope it is in a new production with better direction than what was presented at The Lyric Opera.
I know the lyric is doing a production of the king and I this spring. Maybe they're going to do a switcharoo. If this does get to Broadway I hope Jenn gambatese will be able to reprise her role. She sounded absolutely gorgeous.

What? It could happen. Maybe not, but it could. You don't run the operation.

And don't they still need to do the Houston production of carousel?

I get what you mean, but this sentence makes zero sense.

Tony specifically said its the Lyric production that would transfer.
If it's true, that's a real shame. I left at intermission. The sets were mostly ugly (the giant piles of poop used for the bench scene were particularly hideous) and the choreography either uninspired or just flat-out weird (particularly the creepy freak show choreography in the opening). June is Bustin' Out was staged using the blandest of the standard "opera" direction and the first act finale was staged and designed in the dullest way possible for the space. Pasquale did a great job at holding your attention for the Soliloquy as he had to battle the eyesore of that giant concrete dock. Excellent performances from Pasquale, Osnes and Gambatese. Unfortunately, they weren't enough to make me want to suffer through the rest of the show.
