Posted: 1/4/15 at 10:32pmSad. I didn't get to see it, save for a few clips in found on the interwebs. It looked pretty good, but nothing in comparison to the original. Does anyone know, if after it is available to be licensed, will the original production still be available for performance rights? The new one is relatively different. It would be really weird if all the regional and community theatre productions of the show were like the revival.

Just looking for an answer, not trying to cause any problems.
This show is like my baby. I love it so much. I've done a lot of research on how the revival and the original differ from each other. I would just be a bit sad to see some of those songs not show up when I go to see local productions. That's all.

As it just closed after a failure on Broadway unfortunately not going to tour if ever and how would they market it etc? Leave it to colleges and community theaters. If you saw it as many did including myself...just cherish the memory of this production!
Just curious in why you say this show is like your "my" baby???

I just connected on a deep, deep level with this show. It was the first show I got to see at my college of choice, and my sister and I used to sing the songs together. 
I just love it, and care deeply about what happens to it haha.

I wish it would, but alas, it seems like it won't. I could see this doing really well with a "mini tour". Just Chicago, L.A., and San Fran.
Thinking about it, with the closing becoming a somewhat hot ticket, I bet people who missed it throughout the nation would see it in a heartbeat. Also, if the producers were going to push it through Tony time, why not put that money into a tour? At least they would have a good chance of earning a bit more of it back.

Sadly the chances are very slim. I also missed out on the show, but at least we will have the new cast recording.

Every closing becomes a hot ticket, typically. Between people who had tickets to future dates rescheduling, procrastinators realizing they can't put off seeing it any longer, and people who love the show going for one last time, the box office/grosses always have an uptick as a result. It doesn't translate that word of mouth had finally been building and the show was finally gaining traction... the uptick was related to the closing triggering buying activity, not heightened interest.

Posted: 1/5/15 at 10:15amSafe to say, this will be the licensed version of the show forever. The original will not be granted rights. So we'll see new versions of the revisal, which certainly means fascinating takes on the Condon influence on the script. It's still SIDE SHOW, but the painstaking attention to verisimilitude employed in the second production is now part of the show's aesthetic. Though any director will be allowed to put a stamp on the material, the show now has a grittier feel and a careful examination of the real history, including shooting FREAKS. Though the Longbottom approach might still be used, the script will still explore the subject with more realism. I'd love to see the next incarnation in a professional company. I don't know about the lag time between B'way closing and availability. But the album will certainly create new interest. The earlier version seemed to license well; many colleges with BFA in musical theater programs did it. That will not cease.

At that point in time in the production Daisy and Violet have never been separated except for in Terry's mind - PRIVATE CONVERSATION. After the lessons learned in trying to find love (Daisy with Terry and Violet with Buddy - both of which turn out rather badly) as the twins sing I Will Never Leave You - the realization that they have lived as two in one body (well, two bodies that are forever attached) - and that they have become strongly independent individuals having experienced all that has happened - at that point in the song, Condon has the lights change as they separate and enjoy the exhilaration and knowledge of perhaps the first time in their lives that they feel each other as individuals - each a strong woman who has made choices for better or worse. After that realization, they return to each other's side. I find it a very powerful moment. Each experiencing the joy of their individuality.

To me, it's the ultimate use of magic realism, allowing the characters to view each one another as fully formed individuals as they recommit to the reality of their situation. To me, its utter simplicity as a means of communicating such a profound realization was breathtaking.

They are still licensing the original script. There is going to be a pretty big budget Equity revival of SIDESHOW at one of the major regional theatre in Los Angeles this year that is using the original script/score.

I already have my tickets for it and am anxious to see the original version which I've never seen; only saw the revival when it began at the La Jolla Playhouse. Posted: 1/7/15 at 7:01amBut isn't this more of a technicality in the timing of licensing? Because the new version isn't yet available? I'm not sure the old version will be an alternative one allowed once the revisal is available. I've never heard any of the collaborators express feelings that both will be performed in future. If anything, everyone has been confident that the new edition is definitive. This may be a transition period, until the current materials are prepared, available and can be contracted. Licensing various editions of musicals is complicated, and the original creators are often protective of properties one they undergo significant changes. I saw both versions of SIDE SHOW more than once and I must underscore: the changes are rather radical, not just tweaks. The first act has been entirely rethought. This isn't just like, say, using a different version of "Last Midnight" in INTO THE WOODS.
