Some factors: 1. High School Musical was a HUGE thing when it was released and it's still well-known today. 2. They managed to make Newsies (a real-life Disney movie) a Broadway musical. 3. I think the national tour was a hit. 4. HSM actually did come to the West End in 2007.
But, I do think the movie would be too cheesy to be on the Broadway stage. Again, Charlie Brown was on Broadway...
What do you think is the hook to get audiences in the door for this show?
HSM is geared toward teenagers and that's a difficult market to produce for. I think HSM has a "cool" factor of zero and teens want a show that is more cool like Wicked. Yes, they're willing to drop $13 at the movies and blow away a Saturday afternoon, but it's different when you're shelling out $150 and have to make a trip to NYC to do it.
Fame has never played Broadway either and I think it's because people want something more substantial in their Broadway experience.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
The reason Newsies was turned into a stage show was because it was the most requested show by schools to do as a play, there was no show, just the movie. It was never supposed to come to Broadway. It was tried at Paper Mill Playhouse. After the successful run there they then decided to move it to Broadway.
I'd say no as most of the people who were fans of the movie when it was released now look back at it with a "Really? I enjoyed that?" type of attitude.
"In 15-20 years it could have a kitsch nostalgia factor, not only for being a trend, but for being a very mid-2000s pop culture fest."
I think it would get more mileage if someone did a stage version as satire. Much like Reefer Madness did or how Grease was meant as a lampoon of the 1950s.

The audience that loved it back in 2005 has grown up, and would much rather see Spring Awakening, In the Heights, etc. The current generation of 10 year olds hasn't been exposed to HSM as much as the other generation was, so no, I don't think it could work.
Maybe in 2031 in honor of the movie's 25th anniversary Disney might restage it, but from what I have heard the stage adaptation is a a mess in its current incarnation. In 2031, Disney might hire someone who grew up with the film to readapt it and it might work then, since they understood what made the movie work so well in the first place, but until then I don't see it coming anywhere near a Broadway stage anytime soon. The only way it will come to Broadway before then is for a limited run in-between mega-productions at the New Amsterdam if a show closes earlier than expected with nothing immediately in the wings to replace it, since it could be done on a shoe string budget.
I would imagine it really isn't in the works. As others have said, it's audience has pretty much dissolved, plus it would probably be ravaged by the critics and taken as joke by most people (even tourists).
I actually saw this on a trio to Toronto because nothing else was on at the time, and truly was surprised they didnt bring it in to Broadway as atleast a filler. That being said though, I thought it looked rather cheap, so maybe Disney didnt think it was up to 'Broadway' standard
