I don't speak Austrian, but judging by ages, it seems to me that all three possible fathers and Sophie are white. I'm fine with color-blind casting, as long as it's done appropriately.

If it's only done "appropriately" then can it really be called color-blind casting?

A black woman and a white man could produce a child who could appear "white."

Yes, but...usually not, let's be honest. But it's a musical - an ABBA jukebox musical at that, so realism isn't really required I guess.

If it CAN happen, and in the world of this production, it did.

And it can happen. Look at Rashida Jones.

If race isn't an issue, then it isn't an issue. In the Mamma Mia movie, it's very unlikely that Meryl Streep (5'6") and any of the possible dads (all 6'2" or taller) would have produced a daughter as petite as Amanda Seyfried. However, I heard no protests about casting such a short actress.

It's Mamma Mia. Are we really that concerned about "realism"?

"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."

Of course, they speak German in Austria. See what happens when you post without drinking coffee?

I think of color-blind casting more for situations like the recent STREETCAR revival. Or like ROMEO & JULIET. But it always irks me when families don't look anything like families.

Considering your biggest addition to this thread is that Rashida Jones "looks mixed. And hot.", perhaps you're not the best candidate to deride others.

I'm white and my wife is Latina. If my kid looks as lily white as me, I'll be very surprised. It's 10th grade biology folks: dominant genes and probability.

That said, I've been on this board for ten years and have had enough with the colorblind casting debates. Forgive me for trying to have a little fun.

But what you said isn’t quite true. I can think of MANY biracial children who can easily pass for White that I know personally- why, I’m pretty light myself considering how dark my father is. LOL, and have played White on stage many a time.

In fact, I have a couple of biracial kids that have Blonde hair and blue eyes in my own family.
