Bette Midler ?@BetteMidler 16m Congrats to @CicelyTyson on her well deserved Tony. I was not at the awards. Dined out with @AlecBaldwin, @ScarlettJohansson and @FionaShaw.
She really does need to get over it. She's really coming off very embittered. She felt that just because she's Bette Midler she deserved a nomination by default? You don't see Tom Hanks and Scarlett Johansson carrying on this way...at least not in public.
Huh. The way I read it, her tweet just comes across as a good-natured joke at her own expense. After all, she congratulates Cicely and sounds sincere. I guess I'm missing the bitterness. This just seems similar to Nathan Lane jokingly bemoaning his lack of a nomination in years past, on the broadcast itself, if memory serves.
@Someday. I do see your point. Maybe bitter is not the right choice of words. Her congratulations to Tyson does come off as sincere and she should have left it at that.
When you add that last swipe at humor onto the fact that she pulled comp tickets for members of the American Theater Wing after she didn't receive a nomination it just comes off as sour grapes, at least to me.

Yes, Nathan did joke about it on a broadcast. And Patti LuPone has several times made snippy comments about not winning, prior to Gypsy. And also, Elaine Stritch, while being a lower profile actress, has made her share of comments.
And of course, let's not forget the Hunter Foster comments re: Cat Zeta-Jones.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
Exactly! And I loooove that picture of Carolee and Patina, that's the attitude people should take about these awards, they are so fun to celebrate and get into but as long as people have a perspective on it. Taz, so happy you brought up Patton Oswalt's tweet! The "Charlize and Tilda just pulled up in a stolen police car" makes me crack up every time for some reason:
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
"She" didn't pull any of the TONY voters' tickets from her show. Those kinds of decisions are made by the producers (and she is not one). And it was purely a financial one. To have to give up some 800 (x2) tickets for voters to see your show when it's not even in the running makes no sense. Why not sell them to audience members who want to see the show. And now that they have announced they have recouped, it seems like it was the right decision.
I am wrong. In re-reading the initial tweet and the responses from my fellow BWWers I would have to admit that yes, I am wrong on this. I stand corrected and I'm not above owning up to that.
