Most suggestions (especially gaga and hilty) couldnt even pass as a college student.

I'm sure they'll have big names for Glinda, Morrible and Fyero

So i was thinking
Ariana Grande as Glinda
Idina Menzel as Morrible
Tveit, Efron, Jonas or even a dude from OneDirection as Fyero

We'll have Kristin cameo as Elphie's Mom

Elphaba is tricky because.... She could ended up as a motion captured CGI with a voice talent of either Lea Michele, Samantha Barks or Jennifer Hudson.

Even a tiny part of me wants to see Beyonce as a fierce morrible

The concern over casting big stars in movie musicals has become a common wisdom, but shouldn't the purpose of big musical movies - especially ones that will sell themselves like "Wicked" because they are based on megapopular stage shows - be to create movie stars as well as to perpetuate them?

There were no stars in "Oliver" the greatest stage musical adaptation of all time, a huge success, and an oscar winner. It could also be argued that the cast didn't become movie stars, with the arguable exception of Oliver Reed, but that may have a great deal to do with the fact that 1) it was not a period when movie musicals were in their ascendancy, quite the contrary, and 2) the characters in Oliver were subject to very particular casting not nec. conducive to well cast actors having major careers afterward.

Samantha Barks is a great talent, a great singer, and the camera loves her, and she is coming off a big musical hit movie in which she got great reviews. She's a terrific choice for a movie like Wicked.

I would also be very excited to see a great actress who can also sing very well, someone who has shown that she has the talent and screen presence to become a movie star, if she isn't currently one - someone like True Blood's Deborah Ann Woll - be considered for a big lead role in a musical such as one of the witches in Wicked.

"The concern over casting big stars in movie musicals has become a common wisdom, but shouldn't the purpose of big musical movies - especially ones that will sell themselves like "Wicked" because they are based on megapopular stage shows - be to create movie stars as well as to perpetuate them?"

The problem here though is that several of the modern adaptations of the megapopular stage shows failed horribly without casting any real stars. Obviously the case can be made that there were terrible decisions made all around (I'm specifically thinking of Phantom, Rent, and The Producers), but the lack of star power certainly didn't help matters.

On the other hand you have movies that did put a focus on the stars they cast, such as Chicago, Mamma Mia, and Les Mis and the studios saw huge box office returns on those properties. Even Hairspray, which did attempt to make a new star with Nikki Blonsky, still relied heavily on the other stars in the cast (John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Michelle Pfeiffer for the older crowd, Zak Efron and a pre-going off the deep end Amanda Bynes) to help draw crowds in.

And of course you also have the phenomenon where just having one star will inevitably draw a higher level of talent to the project. I would argue that you can't just cast one star (especially if you are talking one who is highly regarded both by the industry and the public as a great actor, such as Meryl Streep) and surround that one star with a bunch of unknowns. The comparisons will be inevitable, and most will probably be unfavorable.

Joel Grey has won an oscar so...lets just have him be the wizard again...even though i doubt that would actually happen.

For me if they hurry up and make it then it should be Justin Timberlake, I just think he fits the role perfectly. Second would be Zac Efron, like Timberlake he can sing and dance and can act (The Paperboy showed just how well he can act). Chris Pine could work depending how he is in Into The Woods. Aaron Twait has no onscreen presence.

Other than an unknown I think Samantha Barks is currently the best option for Elphaba. The CGI idea I dont think would work for a whole film as its not at a level where a person is believable enough.

Michelle Pfeiffer for Morrible

Now here are Playbill readers choices for Glinda.

I think only one of those ideas is even viable. Kristin, no matter how much I love her, is WAAAAY too old to be playing Galinda in a movie version. The two big Hollywood names, Amy Adams and Anne Hathaway, are both terrible choices (in my opinion, although I think Adams would be a good Nessarose). The rest are Broadway actors who would have absolutely no draw in a Hollywood Box Office. The only viable choice here is Megan Hilty, who has proved she has great screen presence and can play the role phenomenally!

My Cast Would Be As Follows:

Samantha Barks (Elphaba)
Megan Hilty (Galinda)
Zac Efron/Aaron Tveit (Fiyero)
Darren Criss (Boq)
Ariana Grande (Nessa)
Bette Midler (Morrible)
Joel Grey (Wizard)

I think Hilty could potentially do it, but I'm not sure that pairing her with Samantha Barks (who I also think could be a viable option) would work. Hilty looks fantastic for her age and could still play somebody younger than her 32 years, but I think she would need to be paired with somebody else who is also playing down in terms of age (and this is of course assuming that the film is made in the next year or two, which very few signs seem to be pointing to).

Side note - has Laura Bell Bundy had work done on her nose, or is it just a weird photo that Playbill chose to use?

Megan Hilty & Willemijn Varekaik. Universal needs to get this thing going before Willemijn gets too old...

If they are looking for younger leads, I can see them considering Ariana Grande for Glinda since she's big at the moment.

Grande has a great voice, but are we sure she could carry Glinda?

Also, is this film even 100% happening at this point?

The producer said it will happen, but don't know when.

Maybe we will hear something once the tenth anniversary comes around next month.

Now seen as, much like Rose in GYPSY, the two leads will be the wrong age at some point in the story...

What do you guys think about splitting the roles? There is nothing to say it can't be many years between the end of Act One and the beginning of Act Two. In fact if they want it to tie with the original movie, they really should be 40 plus. Obviously it doesn't have to tie with the movie but if you take into account the amount of confused audiences asking why there was no Elphaba in 'Oz: The Great and Powerful...a lot of people can't get their head around the idea that there was originally an Oz book and that current incarnations are interpretations there of.

I think it could work really well -

I.e.
Older Glinda opens
Young Elphaba and Glinda from 'Dear Old Shiz' up until 'Defying Gravity'
Then the older ones thereafter.

You could even make Defying Gravity into a sort of montage so that the latter part is sung by elder Elphaba.

Idina Menzel and Kristen C could then play the 'older' version.

I recently thought of this thread again and figured I'd bring up some casting ideas:

GLINDA - Ariana Grande
DOCTOR DILLAMOND - Morgan Freeman or Bill Cosby (I thought it would be neat to see iconic actors in this role)
MADAME MORRIBLE - Imelda Staunton or Tilda Swinton
NESSAROSE - Chloe Grace Moretz or Lily Collins

I really feel strongly about Ariana. By the time this movie comes out she will most definitely be much more of a name. Plus, her range is unbelievable and acting wise, she's much more than people would think. Also, she's only 20 and will most likely look 20 for a while longer. Updated On: 10/18/13 at 02:30 PM

Never thought about Bill Cosby, interesting choice!

Shoshana and Ariana would make a heck of a pair. Am I the only one who sees Amy Adams as Nessarose?

Amy Adams is 39. This movie probably won't happen for another 3 years, which would make her 42. And with Shoshana, she'd be 39 to Ariana's 23. Plus, Ariana looks MUCH younger so Shoshana would look more like her mother.

ps. I'm still standing by my idea of Zac Efron as Fiyero. And to be exotic, maybe Johnny Depp or Robert Downey Jr. as The Wizard.

I don't see what everybody else sees in Anna Kendrick and Samantha. Both are great actors and singers, but I just don't seen how they would be a good Elphaba.

Sam is certainly qualified to play Elphaba in a screen adaption. What do you think is missing?
