The release date for Wicked is moving according to Deadline. It doesn't say to when though.

Exactly. Universal has confirmed that the film adaptation of WICKED has been delayed due to production scheduling. This means it could be a few more years before the film goes into production.

We should have heard something official by now and the 15th birthday of the show is two months from now

I think we can stop speculating on who will play Glinda and Elphaba since the actors who will play them most likely haven't even been born yet!

I think production scheduling is referring more to the fact that they need more time to shoot the film than planned otherwise it's going smoothly if they're at production scheduling stage they're far enough along to start casting, I wouldn't expect a huge delay. Perhaps a move from Christmas to Spring or Summer 2020.

If Lady Gaga can pull off the early twenties look in the green make up she could be a serious contender with her Oscar buzz.

I think production delays refer to it all. They aren't at the casting stage yet. It'll be at least December 2020 before this thing premieres.

This is probably several years off yet. This will follow suit with Evita, Chicago, Dreamgirls, Phantom, and Les Miserables. It will get announced that it is happening and then fade away again. Casting rumors will come and go, directors will come and go. Maybe someday it will happen, but it won't happen next year, and it probably won't happen the following year either. Be hopeful, but don't hold your breath.

Okay, I've decided.  They can't sing the roles the way they should be sung but I don't care. Emma Stone as Elphaba and Anna Kendrick as Glinda. You're welcome.

You forgot Russel Crowe as the Wizard.

I prefer the reverse Emma as Glinda and Anna as Elphaba

Exactly. If it were postponed simply to the following summer or following year, they would say so. They aren't, which likely means they're trying to work out a new timeline with the creatives' schedules.

And yes, dream casting at this phase is even more of a dream since it's still years away.

I think a film version of Miss Saigon was originally announced for 1994 or around that time......still waiting.

We all know that Ariana is going to be Elphaba, so they better hurry up while she’s still the biggest music star on the planet.

Just because it’s been delayed does not mean it will be years off. Cats will take 2019... I see a 2020 or even a 2021 release. Movies doesn’t take they long to make. I can see them making it next spring and taking a year to add all the special effects... I have a hunch when they do announce the cast it will come out fast... stop jumping to conclusions... it’s not dead... Universal is very good of making the movies they announce

The release date is irrelevant until the movie is being made. They can keep changing it for as long as they want or need to.

In the Hollywood Reporter article, they did say "The studio says that the Wizard of Oz retelling will be redated soon."

They are just as good at not making the movies they announce. This phase is known as Development Hell for a reason. Films languish in this phase for years, and sometimes decades before getting made or scrapped altogether, no matter what studio is backing the film.

The Phantom of the Opera was originally announced for the early 1990's. I found an old program announcing the film adaption of Les Miserables for "next year", but I can't recall it was from the 1980's or 1990's. I just don't remember, but I'm thinking it was the 1980's.

I have a program (well, at my parents' house) from Les Miz in the late '80s or very early '90s that has an ad with Young Cosette holding movie tickets, saying "Next year, she will be going to the cinema."

Here's the most recent update Stephen Schwartz has given.
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/wicked-creator-stephen-schwartz-fate-movie-musical-1143496

Of course, it appears to be the usual developmental process where the studio won't officially give a project the greenlit until there's a script they feel satisfied with.

Love Schwartz’ admission that the December 2019 release date was fabricated.
