^Well they won't be in the same category.  Also, I can imagine the Tony voters will want to award Renee Fleming for Featured Actress.  I don't think Diana Rigg is a lock especially considering that her role is non-singing.

is Anthony Boyle a contender for featured actor in a play? He won the award in London, so i would hope he would get a nom. I guess it depends if Lane is featured or not.

This is assuming she can act and is stellar in the role. But I don't really see Nettie being a role worthy of a Tony nomination.

I wonder who is going to end being Carrie!

We’ve seen Renée Fleming act. She was in Living On Love on Broadway a couple seasons ago. Her role in that had more stage time and scenework than Nettie, and I thought she held the stage and was engaging, even if she was basically playing a caricature of herself. I’m sure she will nail her role in Carousel. She’s perfectly cast.

I did a quick glance and I dont think anyone has said this, but look for Meteor Shower to be a major contender come nomination season.  I could actually see Benanti taking home a win for this one - she is truly insane in this show.  Set is pretty inventive too.  Script is a bit zany to win new play, but I've seen weirder things, like when LEAP OF FAITH was nominated for best new musical and then closed before the Tonys...

Edit: Took Alison Luff out of Featured Actress and replaced her with Lea Salonga. She’s most definitely the lead of E2M and I just can’t see her being nominated in such a packed year for actress. Also just got rid of the E2M nomination for best score. Doesn’t seem like it has enough new music(or any) to be eligible.

I'm not sure if Laura will beat Denise Gough. She is absolutely fantastic.

As good as Ms. Ambrose might turn out to be as another Eliza Doolittle, I can't imagine Katrina Lenk not winning this category in a walk. Full stop.

Katrina Lenk or bust. Unless Ambrose gives a breakout performance (which we won't know until March), Lenk is by far the frontrunner. A legendary performance.

Agreed, it's Katrina Lenk's to lose. It's one of those wonderful theatre stories in which an actor who's been huffing it for decades finally gets her due, in the role of a lifetime. In a different season (say any of the last four), she would have a tougher time (I actually can't imagine her subtle performance coming out on top of any of those, just because it does have so very little cachet). But this season, it's as good as done and so, so deservedly so. What a talent.

There's no reason to believe Gough would not be eligible for her work in Angels in America.

Best Musical
Best Score
Best Book
Best Actress, Katrina Lenk
Best Featured Actor, Adam Kantor
Best Direction, David Cromer
Best Orchestrations
Best Lighting Design
Best Set Design

I'm not so sure Adam Kantor will be a Tony nom contender. The emotional payoff for his character is gorgeous, but it's extremely minor in the grand scheme of the show.

However, I can see Tony Shalhoub and Ari'el Stachel getting Lead and Featured Actor noms, respectively.

Katrina Lenk is MAGICAL in Band's Visit - definitely hers to lose. That said, I could see Jessie Mueller knocking it out of the park and taking that award. It's between the two of them, in my eyes.

As for Renee Fleming, she's got the icon status going for her, but she's pretty divisive as a performer (even in the opera world) and I can see critics loving or hating her. I love her to death, but even I am sometimes baffled by her choices.

Alex Newell seems to be getting some good reception for Once On This Island so far, could he potentially score a nom for Featured Actor?

It is interesting to note that the role of Eliza Doolittle has never won a Tony for any actress playing her on Broadway. If Lauren Ambrose knocks it out of the park and becomes a sensation (and brings something fresh to the role that makes it seem new while retaining everything theatre goers love about Eliza), then she may be the first to win a Tony for it.

Classic musical characters that never won a Tony should be a whole new thread topic.

Alex Newell has recieved a standing O after his solo everytime I've seen the show. I think I'm going to put him as my frontrunner for Best Featured Actor.

This wouldn't surprise me at all based on general audience reaction. But if someone from that show is going to be nominated for/win Featured Actor, I'm personally rooting for Phillip Boykin. I connected way more with his performance.
