I don't think anyone is saying it will take until 2025 for Broadway to reopen. That date was mentioned at a date for the recovery to be complete, which seems reasonable with the understanding that it will also be different in some respects, which is not a bad thing. That said, I think April/May is way too optimistic to have enough people vaccinated to have a critical mass for Broadway. I think the fall (which seemed optimistic a few weeks ago) is not more reasonable, to a limited extent. But also remember that even if everyone was vaccinated on a dime, the economic fallout from Covid will take a long time to recover from, and for Broadway that is the key metric. (That said, it looks like much of the country is headed for pain that will eclipse what we went through in March and April, and the vaccine is not going to get people who are sick well. The Times says the projection is 2000 DEATHS a DAY and that is a trailing figure from the amount of hurt.) And that that said, all of the talk of the death of NYC or Broadway is just silly. To the contrary, the capital of resilience is not going anywhere.

I think we’re all asking different questions. There are some kinds of theater that won’t come back until tourism is restored. Aladdin isn’t going to open until there are tons of foreigners on the streets. Will producers open shows that can’t be profitable? Maybe Rudin will, hard to imagine others might.

Non-profit theater could open next year, though.

Behind the fake tinsel of Broadway is real tinsel.

New York’s tourism industry faces long recovery

Forecast from city’s tourism agency predicts recovery by 2025

A new forecast projects New York’s tourism industry might not recover from its pandemic-related woes for at least four more years, dampening hope that the hospitality sector will stage a rapid recovery when a coronavirus vaccine arrives

you posted the same thing twice so I will react once, and only to say that yes that is a forecast by someone with no empirical data so take it with a grain of salt. I'll say the same thing I have been saying since March or April: no one knows anything.

That said, understand that what was said by the NYC tourism dude was that it might take until 2025 to fully recover, which is not at all the same as "to recover" and also that some of us think (and hope) it will not "recover" into some best version of status quo ante because, writing on a relatively blank slate, there are a bunch of things we could do better, starting with the notion that we can make this a better place than it was a year ago. (And note we are already putting some of those pieces in motion, to good effect.)

In New York, with so many of the most vulnerable in nursing homes and assisted living centers having been taken in the first wave, I would be surprised if deaths reached those levels again.

But a friend is telling us that his still young daughter has COVID for the second time, and from the way he diverts questions about how she is doing I infer that she is not having an easy time.

I got to sit in on a talk with the President and CEO of NYC & Company last week. Saw these charts and they discussed going forward and promoting the city and the arts. Very interesting and informative presentation. They seemed pretty aware of the challenges ahead of them regarding international visitors also. A very interesting part of the conversation was healthcare for tourists. They explained the coverage they can get while traveling. Something I had not really thought about. It was nice to hear first hand how the wheels are turning to get us back up and on track.

Just give the world Love.

Once the new vaccine has been given to Healthcare Professionals and Educators then Seniors and the Vulnerable. People who are not at risk i.e. the ones I didn’t list, you can vaccinate whilst the economy is open.

The only inertia that is slowing things down, is what is happening in Washington D.C.

A quick rollout to people at risk from Covid, will be very cost effective as you can start collecting taxes again. So why not open theatre in April/May with off Broadway and maybe some Broadway plays, then hopefully later in the year open the big shows when the tourists come back.

There's going to be a lot of people who aren't going to take the vaccine right away. I'm not anti vaccinations but I'm not rushing out to take this one and I have no desire to sit in a theatre until we are way past all this. April/May will be way too soon for me.

I'm still wary of the side effects of the vaccine that they have to iron out. But I think a June 1 target reopening date for certain shows can be possible now.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I have no qualms about the vaccine but the timetable of April-July is unrealistic, especially in relation to the theatre.

Why not?

Not everyone has to be vaccinated to re-open only people who are in the front line or at risk. You have a programme that vaccinate all these people QUICKLY and FREE, once completed you can re-open and collect all those sales and payroll taxes.

I am not sure in the US if the vaccine will be free or payed for by insurance? Bu being done free, would be outweighed by collecting taxes earlier.

from the CDC: Vaccine doses purchased with U.S. taxpayer dollars will be given to the American people at no cost. However, vaccination providers will be able to charge an administration fee for giving the shot to someone. Vaccine providers can get this fee reimbursed by the patient’s public or private insurance company or, for uninsured patients, by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Provider Relief Fund.

So the vaccine is free, but you have to pay for it to be injected?

Only in America, I guess...

No, as it says, your insurance will pay the doctor and if you have no insurance the government will. Pretty standard scheme for all shots; health care professionals do not work for their health, no pun intended.

@Phantom that's a pretty scary misunderstanding of the vaccine protocol. Maybe wrap your head around the science and sort this out for yourself before posting dangerous misinformation.

Your last post, which I have quoted is very rude and disrespectful.

Fair question, why not? If you cannot answer it in a respectful it is better to say nothing.

My scorn is directed towards ideas, not you personally.

You said "Not everyone has to be vaccinated to re-open only people who are in the front line or at risk." That is false and I am aware of no epidemiologist who buys into that notion (save a few quacks, of course). I also bristle at the idea that we elevate payroll taxes and sales above human life. If we over here seem a bit sensitive to anti-science and money over life sentiments, please understand that we have had a psychopathic pathological liar running things for far too long. I really due genuinely and with all due respect urge you to come to understand the science.

Have been coming to New York from Australia once or twice a year for the past decade, mostly for the theatre, and desperately want to return. But even if the vaccines are successful (will wait for independent peer reviewed trials before I get my hopes up), we will have pretty severe international travel restrictions here for a long time. Then there is the issue of increased crime in NYC, which is in the papers here a lot (even more than stories about the growing size of the rats). New York will have a public image problem that, even with the vaccine, will make it unappealing for tourists and the money we bring to Broadway.

KKeller6 said: "I don't think there's any question that Fauci recently discussed pushing the timeline back for " feeling comfortable" about going to a theatre."

On August 28, after five long months of dramatically locked doors and darkened screens, the Logan Theatre — a small, independently run movie theater in Chicago — readied itself to reopen. With major titles like New Mutants and Tenet set for debuts that weekend and the next, the cinema felt optimistic about its chances to slowly crawl back to profitability after making zero dollars for nearly half a year.

“We’re really happy to be back!” the company said in a rosy Facebook post at the time, touting its intensive, COVID-era safety measures, which included the institution of a 25 percent seating capacity, the use of sanitizing foggers, and mandatory temperature checks for all staff. Guests were equally excited. “Thrilled to have you reopening!” replied one fan. “Can’t wait to see New Mutants!” said another, emphasizing that proximity to the theater was one of the reasons he moved to his neighborhood.
What Is CPS Test? Why take the Badlion Click Test?
However, on September 23, less than one month after the reopening, the Logan Theater posted another, more somber message. Its Tenet and New Mutants sales were stagnant. The theater would be closing its doors once again. “Once it becomes clear that there is a consistent flow of films to play,” the statement said, “we will make plans to reopen.”
