The Strand Theater invites you to its final production of the 2008-2009 season. The Strand Theater opened its doors 10 short months ago. Smolder is the final play in an entire season dedicated to new plays by emerging playwrights. The Strand Theater is very excited to feature playwright Julie Lewis, whose last play Jarvis Legend's Borrowed Skin was featured in the 2008 Baltimore Playwright's Festival. Julie shares her love of theater with her students at CCBC-Essex, where she is an Assistant Professor. Smolder is directed by newcomer Lia Boyle, who recently finished an internship in dramaturgy from The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey after graduating from St. John's College.

Smolder examines The Life of Sylvia, an executive who caters to no one but herself. After an accident leaves Sylvia scarred, her building's superintendent, and former admirer, Reno, is left as her only contact with the outside world. As her dependency on Reno grows, Sylvia's previous life as a publicist becomes dimmer. Smolder juxtaposes scenes from her bright, self-absorbed past with scenes from her dark and self-deprecating present. We see that Reno's former obsession with loving Sylvia turns to resentment, as adoration turns to torture.

Smolder opens Friday, April 10th, 2009 at 8pm. The Baltimore City debut of Smolder begins with a reception prior to the performance with refreshments donated by Joe Squared and Tapas Teatro. Following the performance, a talk back will take place with the cast and crew of Smolder. Smolder runs Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until April 26th.
